850 exhaust sealing ring

Thankyou for your quik replies
I just had the left side off to have a crack at the balance pipe welded
I have high temp silicone, so back together it goes
No riding here tomorrow, forcast 30-50 cm
Do you use the retainers on the exhaust nut?

Even swapping pipes?
I had my header pipes made for my Commando/Featherbed back in 1982 by my local muffler shop using a mandle bender 74 850 motor with no balance pipe, all I use to seal the header is use the cone seal ring and rose and have been using the same seal rings since 1982 and nothing else just a tighten up rose and one bolt/nut where the muffler hangs at the rear, takes about a minute or 2 to remove the header and muffler in one piece, still the original rose for the headers from the factory.
Ken who bent the pipes was very good at what he did and each pipe was made within 15mins each so 30 minutes to bend and weld 2 header pipes tucked close into the frame, he bent the pipes from head to the rear and I cut them down to where I wanted the muffles mounted, he charged me $20 and next door to his shop was a new chroming shop who also charged me $20 at the time to chrome them, so $40 all up and I am still using the same headers to this day, they are showing their age but still hanging in there so near 44 years ago.
Ken also bent up SS header pipes for my 81 Triumph Thunderbird not long after but using SS cost me $40 to make.

Leave one clamp loose on the balance pipe, then any movement will no longer put stress on the joints. If it leaks it will only leak until the leak fills with carbon.

I always thought these washers were crush washers and once used had to be replaced to ensure a good seal. At $1.00 USD, is it false economy to re-use the washers?

My thoughts too, for the task of cleaning the rose threads periodically to prevent future seizing, if the gaskets can be recrushed without exhaust leaks, I'd like to know

High temp copper Silicone to threads and crush rings . Simply re-use them .
Honda CB 350 crush rings are pure copper and work well too .

With my 850 motor hard mounted in the Featherbed frame I never have any problems with the rose coming lose (I don't use any locking rings on the rose), once tighten they stay tight, the first few years from new in the Commando frame I had to retighten the rose a few times and had to clean the threads once or twice with a threat file, so it was a regular thing giving them a nip up, got to a point I carried a special tool just for tightening the rose when out on the Commando.

I put never-seize copper paste on the threads on my 850 exhaust port rose. Any thoughts on that?
Dennis
