The Magneto Guys Anti-Wet Sumping Valve

My H2 Kwacker wet sumps.
The Magneto Guys Anti-Wet Sumping Valve

With my bikes, if left sit all winter, the wetsumpers fill their sumps after a month or so and then they leak all over the floor. They don't leak when the sump is at its normal operational oil level.
For the last few years I've drained them in the fall and pulled the plug wires, plus put a big note on the speedo " No oil"
That works.
I only have one with a valve and it's nice, no leaks, no extra draining required, just like a modern bike.
Any which way is fine with me, put a valve with interlock on, or don't put one one and drain the sump after it fills, or drain it for winter, or ride the bike often and keep it pumped out that way.
It always surprises me that the folks who have never installed or used a valve with interlock get so annoyed with those of us who do use them without problem.

Just pay your ransom on time and no one gets hurt!

It don't worry me what folks do to their own bikes, don't use a valve, use a valve it's up to each one to do what is best for them, I am lucky mine only wet sumps if left sitting for 5 months, no big deal as it's very rare I let it sit idle for that long, last year was a one off of not getting out on the bikes much with the wife health problems but all good now with her eyes so won't be letting the Norton sit to long before getting out on it, I love riding the Norton as well the Thruxton and a lot more camping/fishing trips away.
Without a valve the best thing if I let it wet sump when it sits idle it keeps the cam fully lubed when sitting for some time, drain the sump before starting and the cam and bottom end has been lubed, I also use a dash of STP mixed with my motor oil so it sticks on lubed parts.

G’day from the antipodes. I’ll risk the wrath, ridicule, and flaming of the anti-tap brigade to pass on my experience with Fekked tap on my 71 750 Commando.

Initial thought on receiving the coil-version tap was nice heft and engineering. But before fitting it I gave it a thorough look over, and found when opening the tap it would close the switch (make electrical contact and thus allow ignition unit to be energised) when it was about half open to pass oil. Disturbing…

With a bit of fiddling I dismantled the tap and reassembled as per the magneto version, which only operates the switch when the tap is fully open.

That means the switch is open (ie not passing electrical current) when the tap is only fully open.

To remedy that I’ve installed it with a standard automotive SPDT relay so it only energises my Tri-Spark when the tap is fully open. It also means I could discretely install a red LED in the steering head tube bung to remind me why the bike won’t start if I did get forgetful and leave the tap closed. I suppose I could also connect the horn to that as well as some have suggested, but if I’m that forgetful I think I’m probably past my use-by date anyway.

Bottom line. If you are buying a Fekked tap, or already have one, I’d go to the magneto setup with relay, for reliable and reassuring use.

I’d add some pics but can’t figure out how to do that.
