That's where the condenser pack was mounted on the early 20M3 Commando (Fastback).

It was a "great" place to put the condensors, You had to remove the oil tank to change them. I say "great" because it stopped mechanics from changing them when they replaced the points every time. My 1968 20M3 Commando still has the original condensors in it and they test fine!

With the price of points and condensers these days, it makes electronic ignitions look like real bargain. If I rode the bike on the street regularly, I would mount a spare pair in a place where, I could get to them easily.
And if you did change them, you had to take the oil tank out, so it gave you a chance to clean the oil tank get all the old oil out.
A good thing to do every few years.

I was all over my original 126XXX 68 and I don't remember seeing them there.

Neither did the guys and gals who worked on them years ago. They were in the same rubber cover and mounting plate as the later bikes had, The OEM wire harness has the same colored wires BW and BY too. I didn't own the bike from new, but it had a rough life before I got it. I always thought the larger capacity oil tank was cool and useful if raced and it's the "side cover "too!
