Who knows what damage some previous owner did to the threads in the last 50 odd years? It is good practice to stop tightening if you feel something is not right and who among you has ever checked their torque wrench for accuracy?
The fastener manufacturers torque tightening figures relate to the particular fasteners strength, not the strength of the material they are screwed into. Studs used in cast aluminium tend to have coarser threads in the aluminium than at the nut end which further complicates things.
