Been there, got the T shirt read the book watched the film. 🙄 . When I took off the cover and looked inside, hoping against hope that all is good my arse caved in and I got that sickly feeling in my guts, went inside for a cup of tea and a reflect and realised it wasn't the end of the world. When it's your own pride and joy you feel sick, but I suppose if your a mechanic it's just another repair to get on with and you don't get that emotional link with it. I just wonder what a mechanic thinks when his own bike drops it's guts , is it just another job.?

Do you mean replace the starter?

Have you used heat on the bearing/shaft ? This will free the loctite .

Mmmmmm CG, I’m slap in the middle of that group - 7 years 15k! She’s sounding fine (the same as always) and running sweet. Reluctant to be starting to strip given that scenario. May rethink though!

Don't want to worry you mate but mine fell apart at 16.5K and it too sounded and rode fine 😳 maybe Norton should have made them with Perspex outer cases for remote inspection of said problem.😊

I have had a few bikes through the shop that run like that, but we still welded the basket pins for security and checked all the other bolts and hardware. You also get a birdseye view of the primary wear because the little ledges by the screw holes will keep shavings on them even during oil changes, so you can at least see if there are other issues.
 
Before handing my 2017 961 over to Stu for an extensive engine rebuild my clutch was the bane of my life. I had come to the conclusion that it was an inherent design problem and made me think seriously about moving the bike on. It would shriek, kangaroo and any attempt to race anything off the line would lead to a very bad and embarrassing experience. I tried swapping springs and friction material which gave a slight improvement but still far from perfect.

Stu found that the centre nut was loose and drilled out the oil holes and it is now fantastic; way better than my Ducati (wet) clutch which I was comparing against.

So hopefully you should be able to achieve the same success. Keep us posted.....

Ahh but since I fitted roller skates to the end of the silencers when the front wheel lifts due to their weight at least they don't drag on the ground......
