76 MK 111 . Using Castrol 20-50 W.
Can I do an oil change to 5W50 synthetic ( just purchased a jug ) tomorrow ?
Cold now and I want to extend the season . With the electric vest .
E-start protests after a cold night .

I use 10/60, the lower 10 means the oil flows quicker at startup. 5 would be even quicker. I would not use a 5/40 or a 10/40.
I would not use it. The newest synthetic oils work well with newer running metal surfaces that are finished way more smoothly than our machinery. Hence today the lack of reel running in. That being said, maybe there are some more knowledgeable people here who coould discuss oil film thickness behaviour under load at operating temperature. Not sure that conventional oil film thickness is the same for synth under the same conditions though.

Battery output dropped by cold? Can you set up a sump warmer blanket like Ive seen used for cars (both on sump and/or battery) stored outside in winter? Then you could stay with the recommended oil weights.

Be concerned about whether additives will be sufficient for flat tappets. I would not go that thin for the reasons alredy already noted.

Battery super good . 12.8 dropped quick to 12.3 V. after attempt . Electric starters are close to a dead short what - with the massive amperage they can draw .
Hit the starter and she says no way on this cold day today . Pulled battery for a proper charge . Went to 13.6 , then 5 hrs. later settled in at 12.8 . Temps went up to 10 C. today but rainy . Tomorrow up to 13 , only foggy rain , so I will do the oil change on the street .
Does Crappy tire sell a sump warmer blanket or another source ? Here in Toronto we must do a street flip - over every 2 wks . ,and of course it's across the street legally at the moment , until the 15 th . ' when I move over in front of the studio and have access to an extension cord .

Is it sumped?
Good question . I doubt it , seeing as It's MK111 with a good pump and timing cover plunger to arrest that action . Only did this protest when the temps . dropped the other day . I'll change the oil tomorrow and keep all informed .

Something like this is what I had in mind:

I used 5W/40 Fully synthetic Tesco (supermarket) own brand for around 12 years for summer and winter use, absolutely no issues at all and the engine was clean with hardly any visible wear.

The jug is Motomaster Formula 1 SAE 5W-50 Ultimate Protection Synthetic . No ZDDP in it's specs . I've used Synthetic before in the Norton .

Also picked up a 5 L. Jug of Castrol GTX Classic High Zinc Content SAE 20W-50 . Not for use in Modern vehicles . Made in Canada . Never seen it before . For next season .

I used Yamalube 10/40 fully synth oil for several years in a 600 dommy in UK summer. No issues at all appart from used a bit and not as quiet running. Gone back to 40 ,runs a bit quieter, next change will be 20/50 and fully synth if i can find some. GTX is good.
