Herringbone Oil Lines

Hi Folks, Has anybody come up with a suitable replacement for the Herringbone oil lines? I have one oil line that has some pretty deep cuts in it. 74 Norton 850. Thanks, Jack

For my MK3 I went with Gates 27057 Transmission Oil Cooler hose. It has a slight weave pattern and looks great on the bike.

Many hoses do not fit the protectors, these do. Most importantly, they are meant for hot oil

Those protector sleeves work quite well for the hose but eat the snot out of anything they touch externally. I use pvc spiral wrap.

How much pressure do the oil lines see? Mine are still the originals. They looked and felt ok when I had everything apart. I prefer original parts within reason.

Almost no pressure really as the feed is sucking and the return is pushing on an open end.

I’d guess the return line from engine to oil filter sees the highest pressure due to the resistance within the filter?

But they do see sunlight, and vibration, and possibly some rubbing, and are containing hot oil. All things that can lead to deterioration.

And a failure could be pretty catastrophic…

I also use the hose along with the sleeves that Greg uses. I am not familiar with the pvc spiral wrap.Where does one find these?Are you talking about the split pvc for wiring?

Almost none.

Interestingly, the original hoses used by Norton, Triumph, et. Al. seem to last forever if routed correctly, not rubbed on, and not clamped too tight. If the end is damaged by a clamp, that often be cut-off, and the line still used.

Somehow, they stay flexible. Of course, if considering continuing to use 50-year-old hoses, caution is in order. True original "Herringbone" lines will have one or two faint lines. Usually orange and/or green.
