In Australia, most of us speak English, so we believe we understand what the British are saying, The truth is, the Britsh might just as well be speaking in Swahili. Until recently, I did not realise that when they referred to 'the city', they were talking about a small enclave in London, which is known as 'The City Of London'. It is the financial centre and has it's own laws and police force, It was ser up under William The Conquerer. What is said there if often full of innuendo and subtlety. My friend who died last year, was an ex-pat Pom. I asked him about what was happening when I watched the British parliament on TV, and sometimes a comment is made, and someone on the opposite side of the house looks as though they have been shot. My friend said 'with them, it is an art form'.
