72’ Final drive chain. DID?

At any rate, 10B-1 is the original drive chain for the Commando - correct?

10B-1 M106SL, the better one recommended by Andy the original chain man and what I have on my Commando certainly fits as it's narrower than ISO 10190. The Elite sold by AN therefore should also fit. It's the ISO 10190 Elite that is too wide as you discovered.

It is.

I almost wrote "unless ELITE is IWIS" in that last post

The chain is on and fits. If I had known ELITE was IWIS, I would have bought a 100 link ELITE, and saved myself the trouble of breaking the 102 link chain down to 100 links.

The .835" measurement was with a harbor freight digital caliper. Not a particularly precision instrument.

I had a bunch of small parts to purchase from AN and added the chain to the list. It worked out. The doom and gloom stuff presented in this growing thread about rear chain had me going down a mental rabbit hole. Fortunately, I made the right decision.

Hopefully when we start re-hashing is subject again in 3-4 months, AN will have quit calling it a 530 chain and start calling it a 10B-1 chain :)

It would also be nice if the various lengths had the same description at AN except for length if they are all the same chain - threw Schwany off and would have me too.

Although it is nominally 5/8" x 3/8" it is not a 530 chain - different specifications, and quite different overall widths.

Update for the next guy in 3-4 months: the dime city chain even with a riveted master still was going to rub and forget about the chain guard. I have the AN chain on now.

I agree with Marsh! Stop calling it a 530 chain.

So does anyone know who actually carries the better M106SL chain in US? 2hrs of searching getting nowhere quick. And isn’t the ‘regular’ non strengthened IWIS/Elite 10B chain what was always fitted - and currently being sold by AN. So a regular IWIS/Elite 10B sourced this side of the Atlantic would be OK?

Unless something has changed in the last two years, you won't find it here. If you can find the IWIS chain that AN sells, it would be fine but you won't unless its from someone reselling AN.

IWIS industrial 10B is available here but if you mention motorcycle, the two companies have (had?) it will not talk to you. At one time I sold IWIS Elite chain that came from Wassell, but it's not the same as the chain from AN and it all got returned to me for refunds

I was planning to stock AN's Elite chain, but the shipping is so high I'm sure I would be stuck with it.

There may be people in the UK willing to sell you 10B industrial chain, but it is specifically not for motorcycles.

So, I convert the bikes I build and my own to 520 chain when they need new, and use DID x-ring chain.

I hear you Greg. Thank you for putting your comments on your website. I don’t think that we have had any confirmation that the Elite chain sold by AN isn’t the ‘industrial’ Elite 10B-1 It certainly looks like that is what it is in the pictures on the website - black colour (and ‘lower’ price). And reading between the lines of the thread above from the Original Poster (OP) above I suspect that is exactly what it is! I wonder if we are getting panicked into nothing here.

I ended up ordering the Andover Norton Chain. They ship fast enough to not worry about US sourcing.

I’ll be reaching out to Greg when I need another for a conversion.
Were you able to determine what the AN chain was? Did you have any other part number on it besides the Norton part# and Elite 10-B. As I said, "I don’t think that we have had any confirmation that the Elite chain sold by AN isn’t the ‘industrial’ Elite 10B-1 It certainly looks like that is what it is in the pictures on the AN website - black colour (and ‘lower’ price)."

If this is the case, US customers can easily get that here without incurring trans-atlantic $$$ shipping.

All I can tell from this thread and the detailed IWIS/JWIS Elites sales catalogs is that there are 'several' versions -
1) Black 10B-1 'industrial' roller chain not specifically branded for m/c use
2) ELite 10B-1 SL version with fancy better pin (Superior Link) endorsed by the 'chain man'
3) The Wassel Elite 530 that is labeled for motocycle use but doenst fit Norton Commando as kindly pointed out by others (not in IWIS catalog?).
4) A 10B-1 SS dry version (for foodstuff).

By matter of elimination the AN chain is looking more and more like #1) - or is it a ‘special’ supplied by IWIS for AN only (similar manner as the Wassel-only IWIS/Elite 530 special)?

The IWIS 10B-1 SL isn't "Elite", it's "JWIS" M106 SL.

Yes, the actual Elite "motorcycle" chain is the wider ISO 10190 standard chain sold by Wassell and, as Greg said previously, it doesn't fit a Commando due to the increased width.

Sorry about the Dime City chain thing. The chain I got from them worked on my not Commando, but was a very tight fit, and is now in the dumper. I had an RK on that was even wider than the chain I got from Dime City and it was covered in fine aluminum shavings when I removed it. The Elite chain I got from Andover is a good fit. It stretched but no more than any other chain I've used on said not Commando. Anywho, gotta stay away from the heavy duty stuff.

If you are ever in Seattle, PM me and I'll get you a bottle of $70 whatever.

I have run this for decades, and it's cheap enough to toss over your shoulder annually. Works GREAT.

If you get a chance, could you measure the width of the master link pins on that RK chain? I'd use that chain like you do yearly if it is no wider than the Elite chain.

No worries. If I was into saving money I’d just drive a Honda Accord and call it a day.

It would have worked if I didn’t want to use the chain guard!

Were you able to determine what the AN chain was? Did you have any other part number on it besides the Norton part# and Elite 10-B. I didn’t examine the box too much. It’s says Elite on the links. It’s not black.
