1961 BSA Super Rocket Rebuild

How’s progress Jerry ?
Hello mate,

Unfortunately the BSA had to come down off the lift. I am working on the MK3 at the moment and its a waiting game on the BSA. I am working on the seat base. Its going through the de-rust process and rebuilding dynamo. As soon as I get MK3 done the BSA is going back up on the lift.

The MK3 is getting roller bearings in the swinging arm and a general tweaking as well as:
- I am putting IKON shocks on it (swapping from 750).
- Taking out Trispark and putting Pazon in.
- Its going to be candy apple red when you see it next.

Might I enquire as to why you have both replaced your Trisparks? The BSA is looking very nice by the way.

Martyn.

TriSpark had a run of dodgy ignition units some time back.

The good thing is, they backup up their warranties.

I've posted numerous times regarding failure rates as compared to number of installed units, and it SEEMED to indicate a normal level of failures as compared to total units out there. It just took a while for them to be proven just as failure-prone as the other brands because they hadn't been in there long enough to fail. (EXCEPT for that one bad batch)

I have lost 3 TriSparks. Each time been in the middle of no-where and involved towing. I won a Pazon at a contest so going to use that. I have never broken down due to Pazon.

So i am not the only one to go through 3 of these things. The only good thing is they are easy to change on the side of the road if like me after the first one you learn to cary a spare.

I went through 3 of them(all replaced by Tri Spark) . Actually carried a spare trigger unit. First time it failed was on vacation and bought a Pazon to keep riding . Went back to Tri Spark and the third time it failed I sold unit and unused trigger here for $150. Like Jerry, I couldn't enjoy riding, wondering when the Tri Spark was going to fail. My last 2 were the new improved units.

The interesting thing about Tri Spark failures is there are those who have had 3 failures or more, and those who had had none!

I think I’m on my 5th unit now, and have never had a failure…

I wish I could explain why. But I can’t.

I had a failure a few years ago on the 920 Commando but managed to get home about seventy miles, misfiring partially all the way. I fitted the Trispark to replace a MK3 Boyer which never gave a reliable idle, & also failed in the first week of fitting. Both ignitions were replaced FOC by their makers. The Trispark replacement has been perfect, as has the one fitted to my TR7 Tiger.
I have just bought a 1971 OIF A65 Lightning which I will try running with the Lucas points, just to see how well it runs.

Hi Jerry. You should start a thread in the rebuilds on the Mk3.
I'm sure several of us would be interested. I can assure you, I am.
Are you doing a respray or new sheet metal and storing the Green?

Cheers.........

Damn, Jerry your bikes look better than they did off the factory floor. That BSA is really looking fine.

I just bought a TriSpark. Shouda read this thread a few weeks earlier. Farts, I hope I'm not in the 3 or more failures group. Really hate that intermittent misfiring experience in the middle of nowhere. I did not buy a spare.

I will be selling the one out of my MK3 after i add the Pazon if you want a spare.

Really cool thread to keep watch over...thanks.
You know you can never ride the SR, it might get some dirt on it.:p

I know, but I am building it to ride. I still have a long way to go. I am getting into my MK3 at the moment. Redone the swinging arm. Its a touch job on a MK3. The cotter pins were seized. Should be done soon so I can get back into the BSA. Its my therapy!!

Nice project Jerry - watching with interest .
I am laughing at myself after seeing the first picture of the new tank - said to myself “ who the hell would put all those stickers on a beautiful tank like that “ - then I realized it was the reflection of the ceiling fan etc .. LOL
