Halfway rearsets anyone? (2020)

Dave & Rob,
Any photos of the left [shifter] side of your modifications? What did you use for the folding foot pegs? Are you using a Triumph T140 rear master cylinder and reservoir? How about a photo from the above position of the brake set up?

I actually have not done mine yet. I have a pair of old hangers and an old brake pedal.
The primary side will be simple (I think)
The timing side is a problem (for me).
The thing is:
1. I like and want to keep the kickstart (I have the RGM folding type)
2. I want to move more rearward than Phippsy (looks like he got about 2") to somewhere about 3.5".
That puts it smack bang where the kickstart "knuckle" operates.
BTW - All of the available rear sets I have seen move rearward by about 8" - to the centre of the 3 hanger fixing bolts.
So given that I want to keep the kickstart, I am waiting, watching and thinking - It's why I started this thread.
Cheers
Rob

That is the best location for a rear set, any further forward and you have to clear the primary case and gearbox.

On a Roadster rear sets can feel pretty far back. On an Interstate they feel just right. But until you sit (or better ride) one you really won't know.

I think I may have hit on something (good) - for the timing side, that is. (The other side's a doddle!)

Imagine you cut the RH hanger at the rear of the gearbox inspection cover.
Now, cut a stock kickstart lever about 55mm below the top of the acorn nut.
Weld the two cuts together and, using the kickstart folding mechanism, you have a very unconventional folding footrest - yes, it has a kickstart rubber on it at the moment, but a bit more modification and you can fit a standard footpeg rubber.
I have checked that a RGM kickstarter will clear nicely.
It moves the peg rearward by 3", more if you want.

The key to this solution is the footpeg pivot is on the centre-line of the hanger.

Comments anyone?

There's not much difference between the steel centres of a footpeg and the kickstarter.
The footpeg is about 1.5mm larger in diameter - easy fix!

Pretty neat solution if I'm following you correctly.

I have been looking for another source for the very OEM looking folding foot pegs I used to buy 35 years ago from KK Cycle Supply [defunct]. I found similar on Norvil's web site last night. These hopefully would work for your application above.

https://www.norvilmotorcycle.co.uk/069967.htm

Perhaps a modified 850 Mk III right side foot peg mount and brake pedal would work as a starting point for your foot peg mount and shift lever? Spring load the foot peg or add a retaining latch to the top Z bracket bolt to hold the peg in the retracted position for kick starting?

Thanks for that - though I can't quite see where I would bolt that Norvil unit onto, given my desired position is beside the back of the gearbox.
The Mk3 LH hanger is still the same length as the Mk2 RH hanger, so I would still have to cut it, I think. But maybe I'm missing your intent?
Cheers

Looks workable to me Rob.

Might look ‘busy’ though.

Of course, things would be simpler without that great honking redundant kick start lever ...

Bloody comedians everywhere you look!!
Although having seen that video your daughter took (I think?) I can understand your aversion!

Sort of agree about the kick start ,I have been electric for about 7 years and can’t bring myself to take of the redundant extra weight but I do like the look of the drawing I am using the norvil fold up pegs good quality

Rob, Yes, cutting and welding would still be required using the Mk III right [I did not say left] side hardware. It would give you a well engineered pivot point and a portion of your new shift lever. Best to cut off the Mk III brake pedal pad and weld on the 90 degree angle portion of a shift lever. Note that the Mk III right side foot peg hanger is basically flat at the rear. They use a triangular aluminum plate to space it out. Using that would allow you to move the assembly inboard or outboard as desired. The Norvil foot peg can be attached like the stock units or welded on so as not to impede on the gearbox outer cover. Just a suggestion and worth what you paid for it.

Woz jus’ sayin’...!

Yes, my youngest daughter takes credit for the camera work and unscripted wit in that video!

My next job is removing the kickstart shaft and mechanism from mine...

I've pondered the idea of making a quickly attachable emergency kickstart and stowing it under the seat.

Years ago a friend of mine had a new Kawasaki Z1R. The kickstart lever was stored under the seat as standard. I don't think he ever needed to use it.

In the days when no one trusted electric starts so they had to provide a starting handle :)

Since it would only be for emergency use, you could consider making it out of a strong aluminum alloy, maybe 7075-T6? That would save some weight.
