Who raced Comandos ?

If it is Steve Parrish, I was most impressed by his ride at the last Goodwood Revival. But I have never paid much attention to Mick Grant. I did not even know what sorts of bike he started racing with. It was a same sort of rubbish that I raced myself.

Mick Grant-180mph on a 750 2 stroke in 1978 in the Isle of Man on the way to one of his TT wins, and won a 250 GP at Assen in 1977 I think.A very good, and underated rider.

Mick Hemmings won plenty of races ,I enjoyed watching him dice with Barry Sheene at Goodwood, no parade proper racing. Granty had a bit of a rep for crashing and blowing up bikes. A character alright. I think I have one of his Norton race team paddock jackets from the 70's either his or Rocket Ron Haslams, its huge,I'm lost in it.

Many riders are under-rated because they race on very limited budgets. If you are going to be good, you need to start with a very good bike. So it takes a level of commitment that many cannot afford. Racing with dud bikes just teaches you to tame bad handling and performance. Racing with a good bike teaches you to go faster.

When I was young, I made a conscious choice to stay in Australia, get educated and raise a family, instead of going road racing in Europe. When I think of Mick Grant doing 180 MPH on the IOM, I am certain that if I'd gone racing in Europe, I would have come home to Australia in an urn. The way he started was what I was doing. - 'A career limiting strategy'. Mike Hailwood did not start racing by riding shit-heaps.

He started racing on a Velo

Did you ride works Kawasaki? Works Suzukis? Works Hondas Al?

I was never that silly. You need a different mentality to do that. I would not even ride a modern sports bike around a race circuit. When I race the Seeley 850, I have thoughts about riding too fast, because I usually am. Around the back of Winton Raceway, it us relatively easy to get around faster than most. Anything with more herbs would be a real danger. It is never the speed, but the sudden stop. Some of the videos on Youtube are horrifying, if you have been there. Some of the guys who come off the front straight at Phillip Island almost end up in the Southern Ocean. - Commandos are much nicer.
