Should be no different I have both frames Wideline and Slimline only different is the frame bent differently, I run Commando yokes on my wideline but orginal yokes on my project slimline, but I have never compared both frames together.
1964 (or thereabouts?) a steering lock was added and the yokes (and stanchion centres) widened slightly.
They would have been fitted to a slimline originally but work well on my wideline, unmodified as far as i can see.
The nice bonus when mounting these to an earlier frame is that there is no tab on the frame for the steering lock so i have mounted a momentary switch in the steering lock hole, wired from below - it toggles odometer to trip on my electronic speedo.
The wider yokes give more / easier choice of front brake options. The narrow ones are too narrow for a disc I think, and also make the fitting of some 2LS and 4LS brake a little more involved.
There are some very good 4LS drums around these days.
Drums can be good. Ain’t cheap tho...
But being used to ‘moderns’ you’ll need to think about brakes carefully. When the old boys tell you how good their standard drums were back in t’ day... they are talking from an entirely different perspective compared to what you’re probably used to.
If you are going to build a hotrod Featherbed then you want to be able to stop, so very important to put good brake system up front, my full Grimca system works so well on my Featherbed with one finger operation if you want, but my bike handles so well I hardly use my brakes when riding.
Ash, I never said i was going to build a HOT rod, My plan is to restore/rebuild a tatty old bike, If it has the correct parts i like they will be refurbished. If it doesn't have the bits i like they will be changed. As long as it has a pre unit in a wide line frame It should have a good baseline for a nice bike.
Ideally it will have a nicely shaped tank.
