Always used a 1/8” flat screwdriver to take ‘em off. Bare fingers to put them on. It’s the PROCEDURE you need to refine.
Like a drop center rim, mounting a tire.
Simply fit the closed end fully in the pin groove, but 45 degrees from paralell with the chain, lift one leg of the clip up, rotate the clip until other leg of the clip is fully in the groove, then push the first leg over the pin.
Reverse to remove.
You only need a tool (screwdriver, pick, knife) to lift the first leg to remove.
I understand (all too well) the infirmities, but certainly if you can pull a clutch, you can push a small screwdriver. Tune the procedure....
