After owning a 75 Mk3 in the 80's, which I was knocked off and badly damaged my right leg, I have now managed to buy another.
My intention is to take advantage of the electric start, since I don't kick so well.
The reason for my post is that I am unable to bend my right leg enough to even use the standard foot peg, but I can get it back enough to heel the brake lever.
Therefore I wondering of there were ever highway pegs sold for Commando's back in the days when everyone wanted a chopper?
If so are they still available, or does anyone have an old pair lying about?
Thanks for any input, as I am keen to be able ride the old girl and it is not an option at the moment, with an unsupported leg waving in the breeze.

You could mount an old type "universal crash" bar on the front; with foot pegs mounted on it. That is what I have ... and put on my Hi-Rider when I install my 6" over fork tubes for cool nostalgia cruising. Back in the day you could buy them from "JC Whitney" and they fit just about any bike from the 1970s. Cheers, Pat

I think something like that was mounted on my bike by a previous owner, with the mounts on the front frame tubes, and resulted in this on the fender.

Highway Pegs

Hope you get it sorted so you can ride it
Just incase you don't already know be careful what electronic ignition you use on a MK3
Low voltage to the starter can destroy the sprag clutch

If you do decide to go that route be careful as the fixing clamps have a tendency to damage (crush) the frame down tubes.

Cheers,

cliffa.

Thanks for all the input, I had not considered a crash bar peg mounting option, so will include that in my research.
Yes this one already has a dead sprag, so I will taking advantage of all the superior knowledge and upgrades available these days.
In saying that my old one in the 80's was a reasonable button starter, except for on the frosty mornings.
Regards Leon

I have managed to find a set of 70's highway pegs on Ebay, a bit scruffy but only $10, so these will be a great starting point.

Got any friends with a lathe and milling machine be easy enough to make a set for your bike that will look good.

True, I do have friends with the equipment and skills, so I can learn from using the rough pair, and then be exact with any ideas for improvements.

the Norvil upgraded starter is very good, and Pazon ignition is good for still working at lower voltages( starter in use), and not causing kickback ( sprag damaging). I have both on my Mk3 engined special.

Yes, I have a Dyno Dave starter and heavy duty cables on the way, plus a MKIV digital Boyer is installed, so it should be better than the original.

This is my setup too , works just fine. Big Odyssey battery helps too. No kickback to worry about. The DD starter spins things up wildly fast from a better gear ratio ,except on those frosty mornings you mentioned where things can free-spin. Like yourself I have a kickback injury with 3 steel plates to show for it so moved on to a MK 111 , good luck with your forward custom controls project and riding on despite previous injury..

About 8 years ago I got a set from J&P Cycle and clamped them on the two front down tubes. I was extra carful to shim the clamp bolt so as to only apply enough pressure to fasten the pegs but not deform the tubes. It worked well until I switched over to the low BMW R90S style handle bar. At that point it was an experiment in human origami. Off they came and a little bit of rattle can frame touch up and Bob was my uncle.

Boyer blue MK IV, I do not believe it is digital. It is still analog,
but are reported to be better than the old black box MKIII analog:

Boyer micro digital (long dwell) and Boyer micro power (short dwell):

Your starter was built a few minutes ago and will ship tomorrow.

Just my 2 cents, the charging system is the biggest problem with the MKIII Commando not the battery. Highy recommend the 3 phase 180/210 watt charging system upgrade.
