Rob Jameison , If you could answer this please :)

Have there been any upgrades or changes to the oil pump over the last 5 years for the 961 ???
Any differences between the standard and mk11 models ?

Cheers
Paul

I will say YES . But will let Rob fill in the details . My new oil pump has been wonderful , very glad I purchased and installed it !

At my last service Rob told me I have a new type scavenge pump and he was talking about drive ratios - this is related to a problem where an unusually fast and sustained high speed (emergency) blast up the motorway caused a load of oil to be liberally sprayed over the back end of the bike. Usually my oil consumption is trouble free.

Yes, the pump is different. Scavenge ratio is the same, but the tolerances in the pump are tighter and the scavenge gearotor is slightly different. Cosmetically looks very similar.

Hello Clive , Are you saying that you have had the newer oil pump installed recently ? Where did the oil come from that was sprayed over the back of the bike ? The air box drain ?

Thanks for the reply rob ,
Was there a reason for the changes in the pump , has it fixed any particular issue ?

No - my late 2017 bike came fitted with it. The oil seemed to come from the pipe which normally empties into the catch bottle but had popped off.

That pipe drains from the airbox to the catch bottle , so is your bike getting oil in the airbox?

Guess so. I use the bike to get to work and often take a half hour motorway route and rarely see anything in the catch bottle so I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong during 'normal' use. Maybe I'll try to persuade the wife that I need to go blasting up the German autobahns in the interest of science?

Rob,

Is the one way valve now built into the pump, or still pressed-in?

I have purchased the new pump and the valve is pressed in. Of course , it was already pressed in and ready to install on the bike when I received it.

I don't think there is anything to worry about with the original oil pump.
I had oil being blown into the air box on startup before I got the oil in airbox fix.
I believe the problem was oil from the tank passing thru the oil pump and migrating into the crankcase while sitting for a long period.
On startup the spinning crank pressurized the crankcase and pushed oil thru the breather - into the airbox - and out the drain hose.

Since the one way valve was pressed into my oil pump, there has been no oil passed to my catch bottle.
Even during periods of cruising at 90+(indicated) mph.

Was the fix the result of the one way valve in the pump, or the one way valve placed in the oil cooler return line?
Dunno, but the fix works.

As you know my catch bottle overflowed at end of last year, bang on the 2k mile predicted by Olivia. This was after a sustained high speed motorway thrash and it left me with a worrying niggle all Winter whilst the bike was off the road. Yesterday I had a good 160 mile round trip to Donington for my service with varied styles of riding including a high speed burst for 5 mins or so and I have the tiniest amount of oil in my bottle. I don't know if this is the residue after emptying it myself before the run or if it is new after the service, I forgot to ask Ash at Norton if he emptied it.

2000 miles = 30 ml of oil in catch bottle , I would take that and be happy . That's much better than a lot of the older 961's !
