Anyone Else Have the Fuel Hose Pop Off?

During a ride today, I had an unnerving experience with my 961 Sport. The hose at the fuel tank popped off and drenched my left leg with gasoline. I thought maybe I hadn't pushed it completely on after working on the bike last night. I pushed it back on and heard it click, and rode off home to change clothes and shower. About a half mile from my house, the hose came off again. I pushed it back on again, and again heard it click, and made it home. I'm assuming the quick connect fitting is either broken or just worn out, and I plan to replace it. But I'm curious if anyone else has had that problem.

Nope and I had both of mine off at least a half dozen times each.
 
I reckon at least 20 times, probably closer to 40 (in the last two weeks alone)!
 
Ken , After you fit the fuel line on and hear the click , give it another good push on . THEN PULL and wiggle to make sure it's on. If it comes off then you may need a new fuel line fitting. The female end (hose side) is available from Norton. The red spigot elbow in the pump was not available from Norton at the time I checked. After Richard Pearce broke his red elbow on the fuel pump he was able to find a replacement from Gutsibits in the UK. It was white not red in color but worked. Norton may have obtained these red elbows since we asked about it last year . But most likely if there is a problem its on the hose coupling end which Norton have . Or you may be able to find it here as well , I usually just go to Norton first to get best fitment .

It's the fuel line fitting, for sure. After it clicks, and is pushed on FIRMLY, I can still pull it off with little effort, without squeezing the release at all. It used to require a firm squeeze in the release to get it off, so something failed during this last work session. The red spigot still looks perfect, so I'm just planning to replace the female connector. It looks like it is Bundy style quick release fitting, and a pretty common item here, but if not, I'll just get a complete hose, with fittings, from Norton.

In the car world those horse shoe clips can break easy.
 
Yep, I have on the way home from its first service so I hadn't even touched it, I was doing about 70 mph at the time and had been riding over an hour.

Frasers picked it up and replaced the fuel hose but I have had the tank off a heap of times since and agree with Tony comment above push it on more and give it a good wiggle, it scared the crap out of me when it happened.

If I remember correctly, Blighty (Richard P.)
bought the aftermarket because through Norton he had to purchase the entire fuel pump. Way too expensive just to scavenge the spigot. Maybe that has changed since.

Well, in my case the spigot is not damaged, so replacing it is not an issue. The problem is the connector on the end of the fuel hose, which snaps onto the spigot.

All fixed. It was really pretty easy. A common 5/16"x5/16" 90 degree Bundy quick release fitting, bought on Amazon for $7, works great. For those interested, it is a Dorman part no. 800-123. Problem with the original was that it had lost tension in the internal clip, so that it wasn't holding shape. In fairness to Norton, I think I probably damaged the fitting while removing it. I had to use pliers to compress the release clip and pull the fitting off, but that was only because I couldn't see it well enough to tell exactly where the release clip was. The replacement fitting has a black body and white release clip, so I don't expect to have that problem again. The new one also seems to have a sturdier locking clip. In any case, my fault, not Norton's. This is a picture of the tools and parts needed for the replacement. The right hand fitting and clamp are the originals.

Mine never popped off, but I forgot to put it back on. Man, that pump pisses gas quickly when you turn the key on. LOL. Had a good laugh over it. Where did you get the new fitting? Also, not the push button type?

It is still a push button type, but the push point is on the outside of the fitting when installed, which makes it much easier to use.

I'm having a hell of a time disconnecting the fuel line from the tank. Pushing in the tab and pulling the line just increases the swearing. Any secrets to getting off the line without breaking the red plastic line from the tank would be appreciated.
 
For info: the entire fuel pump unit and therefore also the fittings, is common to Moto Guzzi V7 and other Guzzi models, the male fitting is easily found, the female fitting can only be purchased by purchasing the whole pump, but looking for Ford spare parts. can buy individually
 
One more thing, if you take your tank off, check the vent hoses under the tank. That thin soft tubing gets played out on the nipple. Mine fell off. Just snipped the played out part off and reinstalled.
