Speedo not working and ABS light on

The speedo picks up it's signal from the front wheel speed sensor on a euro 4 bike, the speed sensor above the gearbox is not there anymore.

It is entirely likely that the two things are linked.

Have a check if the speed sensor bracket has bent or something silly like that - if there is too great an air gap then the sensor can't read the trigger disc. The sensor is on the foot of your right hand fork leg.

Of course, there are other factors which can cause the ABS light to come on (like pulling long wheelies)

Hi Rob , Has the hole been eliminated from the casting on Euro 4 ? Or ,is it plugged somehow ?

Aaaah that's what that little bugger is..... it prevents me from using my front fork paddock stand properly as it is mounted right where the stand wants to pick up the forks! I can get the front lifted but it is a 'near heart-attack territory' as the front raises....
We tend to use the front stands which pick up the steering stem here - for two reasons, 1. it doesn't get in the way of the speed sensor and; 2. it is more stable and much easier to remove/replace the front wheel.

The downside is that you have to remove the horn to use one.

Drawn a blank, gotta go back to the factory.

Developed another strange rattle, so gotta go back for that anyways.

I’ve not had chance to get the bike back to the factory yet gents, hence no follow up on this topic.

I shall hopefully do so soon though.

I got to thinking, and realised that’s two unusual engine noises, a cracked exhaust header, and a none functioning speedo so far.

Total mileage: 903.

I guess this is what we call ‘character’?

It’s interesting to compare to the zero stoppages on my ‘74 850 since rebuilding, and tuning it, in 2013.

Just don’t mention this thread to Glen...;)

I have not seen this before , I had a crack appear on the H pipe bracket with the cats on. If this motor could be just a little smoother it would be so much better. Have you checked motor mounts just a thought and does the exhaust seem stressed or forced into position ?

At the weld near the head.

Nigel,

Sounds like an opportunity to me.
An opportunity to replace the entire exhaust with a new 2-into-1 system.

You can justify it to your wife by saying it failed, and simply had to be replaced.
At least partially true.

I won’t tell you what the wife said about it already. It’s too uncouth to repeat...

I have had three significantly irritating issues so far - two early on and a manageable one on a bought-in component which will be sorted soon at the next sevice (6000). May I refer to the Bathtub failure curve; any weak items will fail early on, the failure rate will then drop and remain low until it rises as components wear out. Just try not to drop down the plughole......

Same response from wife. This is because what she sees is a seat with wheels and an engine which should move reliably and economically between home and work. Try giving her an Asda bag-for-life on her birthday to use as a handbag.

Doesn’t seem too much to ask from a modern £16.5k ‘high end’ motorcycle really though does it...?

Look out I think there's a bit of brainwashing happening here from the household senior management.

But can you seriously call it a modern motorcycle? A modern motorcycle is a high volume smooth multi cylinder water cooled device which has been tested and refined extensively. The testing, water cooling, alloy wheels, multi cylinder, high volume mass production is all in the interest of economy and reliability, ie like wot killed off Brit bikes. It's like an old Brit bike with a few issues ironed out like handling and braking.

Looking around the NEC bike show there is nothing that ticks so many boxes for me which I would swap it for even with the tainted reliability record. If it isn't interested in starting one morning then I hop on the pushbike. It's just the ECU niggles that get to me. I would be perfectly happy with a carb setup even if a few neddies got lost in the process. It's the best thing I've done since my paragliding years.

Well said. I had a lovely BMW S1000R modern bike for four years as part of my transition from sport bikes. Functionally perfect but does not float my boat like my Sport. I also struggle now at the shows finding a bike with what I call character. I have had a blowing header pipe from new which turns out to be a weld fault. Rob has sent a new one to the dealers so no problem there. All part of the character sir.

You bet!

A set of 39mm FCR’s, some foam sock filters with internal velocity stacks.
Gut out the airbox to cover the filters.
That would be the heaven.

Could not agree more! Remember I sold my R9T cos it was dull as dishwater and I still say that every ride on the 961 is an event! And now I’ve got handle bars, it’s even comfy!

But... I think it’s still reasonable to expect it to function reliably.

Let’s not let this spiral in the wrong direction though, I’m not whining about mine (not yet), if all I’ve had is teething troubles, we’ll have a long and happy relationship. If 4 faults per 900 miles becomes a trend however, then we won’t!
