Arrived today: ‘72 Commando “combat” (2018)

Hi all,

Finally after many years of wanting I finally found her. It’s a 1972 commando combat [HASHTAG]#201446[/HASHTAG]. I presume she’s almost original as I wanted it. So need to make some upgrade to make it more safe etc. Anyway I keep on reading on this mind blowing adventure of information forum.

Well done, looks like a cool bike
Did you get any history with the bike?
The main thing you need to know is have the main bearings been changed?
Or any modifications to the sump/oil pickup
You will find many views on combat commandos

Thanks!! Yes history is important and did come with it. All bearings etc are done some years ago and made about 2000 miles since than. It’s a good starter and runs superB. Bought it by Holland Norton works, very pleasant to do business with. Also technical minded!

She looks great and by the looks of it and if she is running good then just ride it, I just leave it the way it is and see how it goes, get to know it first, it might surprise you.

Beautiful bike!
Would be really nice to have the classic 'D' shaped gold pinstripe on the tank!
Also perhaps add the original seat grab rail, it's nice to strap a rain suit on to.

I've thought about trying to add the 'D' pinstripe to mine but have had no luck finding paint that matches the "Norton" transfers available. Wouldn't want a color miss-match.

The D shape pinstripe is not used for all years on the commando. As seen in the folder not for ‘72. Or it must have been a personal option.

It was the black 750 Roadster ('71 - '73) that normally had the gold 'D' stripe, other colour schemes did not, however, the choice is yours.

:) Ah learned another thing. The side panels are blue inside, so it left the factory probably in blue. Well I like it without the D striping, so I leave it as is.

Cheers

Is the fuel tank steel or fibreglass?
The original 201446 fuel tank would almost certainly have been "Glass Fibre" although many later '72 (& '73) 750 Roadsters had a steel fuel tank.

looks like a nice tidy riders bike .H N W are good people . Go ride the wheels of it .

Hope it’s not been de-Combatized !

Always seems a shame to me when that happens, a bit like when Gold Star owners de-Goldieize them... and turn them into shinny B33s!

After all, most Cdos aren’t Combats anyway, so there’s plenty of non Combats out there to buy, without de-Combatizing the Combats!

All only IMHO of course.

Ha, it’s not de-combatized. Still has the 2S cam and higher Comp. Made some improvement with the superblend though

Not disagreeing with you, but can modern fuel (particularly as available in France) deal with the original Combat compression requirement for use as a road bike?

Also the grab rail was probably an option in 1972 as it did appear in some of the ads.

Likely to be a late '72 model, as the "Norton girl" photos were changed regularly. That particular magazine ad appeared as late as Jan./Feb. '73.
