i have recently purchased a John Player Commando as a restored bike but with bits and bobs to tinker with.
one of these is the JPS tail/seat unit which when viewed from the rear just didn't seem to sit right, what i thought would be easy as turned into a bit of a nightmare, it seems that the rear mudguard isn't a good fit which on turn throws the seat unit out, no matter how i try it will either end up with the seat unit not sitting correctly (the seat unit on the JPS as the same contour as the mudguard underneath) so a couple of mm out and it throws the seat unit, get the top of the mudguard correct with the seat unit sitting correctly and it ends up a good 10mm out below the number plate.
I'm thinking a couple things, is it a bad mudguard? I have heard that the replacement mudguards can be a pain to fit correctly, but to me it looks impossible with the current mudguard, what is a bit odd the receipts are showing a mudguard from norvil, but there isn't a indent to clear the oil tank pipes? I hsve been told the norvil mudguards hsvr always had the indent, I wonder if it could be a bad mudguard.
option 1: Buy a replacement mudguard from the like of rgm or norvil and see if there is a improvement.
Option 2: Modify the replacement mudguard if its the same, i am fortunate in knowing a really good fabricator.
Option 3: Can't think of a 3rd option :)
I presume the mudguard originally fitted to the JPS is the same as the mk2a commando?
The main issue is the mudguard will have to be spot on in relation to the seat unit, maybe on a standard commando it wouldn't be as critical.
Any thoughts really appreciated.

I think back to basics is a start.

Remove the 'offending fender and lay it on the flat to see if it is flat/straight without the problem being there.
Are the mounting holes of that fender/mudguard central.

The mounting of it to the bike is fairly basic.
The front portion in the centre of the bike as would be the rear at the loop, the centre section should measure central, if that all says the fender is in the centre of the bike and the shape of it fits the seat unit with some clearance then you might want to be checking the seat unit itself.
One or the other is wrong as long as the frame itself is not the problem.

is the seat you are trying to fit an original parts , or a more recent manufacture? if original; my bet is the fender... find an old fender and compare then try and fit it. I've had a bad experience with parts supplied by norvil....

Back to basics tomorrow then, i still have a feeling the mudguard is twisted to a degree, what worries me more is that i spoke to the above parts supplier and he said that none of them are straight because of the rolling process, hopefully this will be to a lesser degree the the current guard, i have a feeling that all of the well known parts suppliers will use the same manufacturer, which leads me to think its going to be a prob with the jps seat unit.
Tbh looking at some pictures oof restored JPS's a good percentage of them seem to have the prob with the seat unit not parallel to the mudguard/number plate mount inc one on a thread on here. I'll live in hope .....

Norvil no longer have access to Andover Norton's parts as they were dropped from the approved distributor list. So they have had to resource away and create their own suppliers and seem to buy a lot from India, so if have bought this mudguard from Norvil it being twisted is not a surprise and other suppliers will have access to better examples.

i think i would like to call B.S. on the suppliers claim that none of them are straight.... maybe the stuff he supplies...

I had to buy a new rear mudguard after an accident. I can't remember if it came from RGM or Norvil. It didn't have the clearance for the oil pipes so I had to do that myself but I have never managed to get it fitted straight. I have tried several times and it's extremely frustrating. Friends follow me and ask if I know my mudguard is out of line. if I was sure that AN supplied one that fitted properly, I would buy one from them.

I’ll telephone some of the suppliers tomorrow and try and find out the situation, kommando are you sure they were dropped from approved distributors list? When I spoke to Norvil it came across that they are on the approved list.
I wouldn’t have thought it’s asking to much to be able to supply a quality mudguard. I was told that you have to bend them when mounting them on the bike maybe mine is more twisted then others. As mentioned previously the JPS tail unit really highlights this perhaps more then a standard Commando.
I’ll give RN Ring tomorrow aa d ask. Any other suggestions re: purchasing a straight one, perhaps India

just wondering if the way forward is a good genuine s/h mudguard? Any pointers ?

I've been keeping my eye on that well known auction site for an original but not seen one. But there is no way of knowing if one does come up that it is the real thing.

The other option is to ask Andover Norton if their rear guard has the clearance for the oil pipes and if it does, hope it fits properly as it's different to the ones without the oil pipe clearance.

110% sure, the owner of Andover Norton posts on this forum as ZDF and he announced it on this forum, partly on the basis that Norvil were selling parts as being from AN but were not. Norvil recently tried to get the NOC to drop Andover Norton ads as they included 'Commando' and he had trademarked Commando, hardly the action of a customer buying parts from Andover Norton, it cost the NOC £600+ to be told his claim was nonsense. Les is not to be trusted.

AN mud guards have the intent - you can see it in this pic. They appear to have stock as well.

Arrived Today, looks MUCH better quality, made in Italy hopefully will get it fitted over the weekend

just typical norvil questionable qualty and poor customer service.

Just a quick update re: The rear mudguard, the new one fitted from AN, 95% better, fairly pleased with the fit, prob a little more time on it, it would be 100%, in comparison with the old one its much!! Better, after taking the mud guard off it became obvious what was causing the issue, the lower number plate holes were a mile out, there were a good 5mm variation with them which was causing the guard to twist, anyway all is well that ends well.... I'll try and post some pics of the ugly duckling

FWIW I just received a new chain guard. The label said Norvil and the holes didn’t line up, The reinforcing plates were half the size of the original!

My original rear guard on my 74 is the same - to get it to line up properly I had to fettle the holes.
