I was taking my CR down to the dealer for my second service and the breather/oil in air fix; I was just thinking how sweetly she was running when the engine started missing.

At 100-110 Kph it was pulling normally for about 40 Km and then started to lose power intermitently. I limped the remaining 10Km to my dealer and just made it; it was barely rideable as I pulled up. It felt like a fueling problem or perhaps an HT lead or coil breaking down.

Any ideas guys? Hopefully the dealer will find the problem.

Regards.

Well the good news is it should be easy to find the fault as it playing up on arrival,Previous things mentioned on these pages it will certainly be, coil/ ignition /fuelling , should be in safe hands atm , keep us all in de loop Stephen

Thanks for the feedback guys. Picking the bike back up today or tomorrow morning. I will keep you in the loop.

Best regards.

Hi Guys,

Just had a call from my dealer. They are yet to resolve the running issue I xpereienced during delivery to the dealer. However when stripped, they noticed that the oil pump was binding somewhat. They are placing a service call to norton this evening to try and get feedback on this issue.

Anybody experienced this before?

Thanks.

Don’t see how the described behaviour could be caused by the oil pump... Did you mean fuel pump?

Hi Raphi,

Sorry, poorly worded. The two are not related. The engine was stripped in preparation for fitting the crank case breather and oil in airbag fix. It was at this stage the apparent binding of the oil pump was observed by the mechanic. By the call back to Norton they are trying to establish whether this binding is acceptable. We all know what the result of a incorrectly operating oil pump could be. The mechanic is yet to establish why the engine was missing/ temporarily loosing power; he will do so when the engine is back together.

I am curious however why the new pattern/lemgth of dip stick is not part of the kit. Without this the risk is that the owner will continue to overfill the oil tank by filling to the old stick and get that oil blown back into the rubber reservoir that is part of the kit?!

The new dipstick is part of the kit, it should be with the rest of the kit.
I've spoken to the dealer RE your oil pump. All should be in hand.

Thanks Rob,

Really great to have you on this site and thanks for the clarification. I have every faith Sean the Servicee Manager at Brisbane Motorcycles, he really is doing a great job.

Long live Norton.

Hey guys,

Dealer did a great job with fitting the kit and sure enough the longer dip stick was part of the kit. Dealer also fitted a new oil pump under warranty as they could not resolve the binding in the old one.

However the running problem was mot resolved. I set off home and again got almost exactly 30km, same as on the way to the dealer and the bike started missing, this quickly got much worse so I limped back to the dealer. The mechanic took the bike for a ride and she was not misfiring as badly. This was clearly because the bike had cooled somewhat.

Whatever the fault it is not arising until I’ve ridden it for some time. Seems like a component reaching a certain temp and breaking down - HT lead, coil? My rudimentary diagnosis only.

I have no doubt that the dealer will sort it. They seem on the ball. I’ll keep you upadated.

Steve

Did you check the head temp sensor yet? I would bet that this one failed. Bosch part No. 0280130026, cheap part and easy to damage, so handle with care...

Dealer is looking at it now.

I’ll keep you informed - thanks for the input guys. Appreciated, as ever.

Still no result unfortunately - the dealer is having some difficulty identifying why the engine is miss-firing. They are liaising with Norton and exchanging electrical components; not sure which ones!

Pretty relaxed about it - no doubt they will sort it out. If not the coil or HT leads, I will still be changing them for Richards items. Guess I should have done this earlier in the piece.

If you are after the Bosch sensors just go down to your local repco I rang Bosch Aus and they said we have them on the shelf go to repco or super cheap and tell them to order , ordered mine today head temp sensor turns up Monday and the other two Wednesday

I can assure you their are fakes a plenty. If you don’t get from a dealer I would be extremely cautious. Its a sad reality that organized crime has taken over the black market of fake brand name high end auto parts. Ive read that they go as far as putting the logo too. You must buy from a dealer network like Porche, Mercedes, bmw dealer. Many (not all) after market parts source places order from dealers who look for cheapest prices which almost ALWAYS lead to fakes.

Just a heads up guys.

I wouldn't doubt it. I paid much less than some on the forum from AutohausAZ in Arizona. The crank sensor came in a Bosch box and says Made in Germany, the temp sensor is blue, came in a small zip type bag with a sticker on it that says Bosch and is stamped made in India....so....No running issues though.

Hope not I'll post when I pick up but that is where Bosch Australia told me to go and the guy at repco rang and ordered them when I stood there, he did offer me cheaper generic ones
though and I declined so hope I get what I've paid for .

Ok guys, got a call from my dealer today and they believe that they have isolated the problem; they have changed the head temperature sensor. Yes, you guys guessed it. This item seems to be prone to dislodging (?) or otherwise breaking down.

Pick it up tomorrow, hopefully I can get all the way home without incident.
