Commando Top Speed? (2010)

ok Hobot, just to end this being perfectly clear

you are saying that you hit 135 mph on your 750 Commando with no serious engine modifications and in fact with only single Mikuni
the laws of physics and mechanics have never been broken, no "miracles" have ever happened
what exactly do you get out of lying?
or is this another one of those "alternative facts" things?

Finally! I been waiting for years to see someone say: liar, liar, pants afire! A lot of hobot’s comments are beyond absurd. And he’s only 3 short of 19,000. Could that have something to do with the decade long ongoing birthing of Ms. Peel? Or are we witnessing an Arkansas myth?

Yehhaaw>doggieDoo did Ms Peel lite my panties on Fire with the heats generated off Hot Snots.

If anything Peel's factory speedo was reading low or moderns high - as had a number of discussions/pleadings with sane pilots to hit/hold 130 on theirs in our rare straights to always wonder why they did not keep their agreement. Peel caused lots of extreme reactions - many like JimC - spitting upset on shattered world view. Of course I feel the slaps of disbelief and I'd be challenging same as he going by what I thot I knew before Ms Peel accidental power. Top speeds that count are done naked as streamlining varies so much and after 120 exposed pilot must deal with increasing wind blast effects. Some Peels 'fantasy' flight-fights ended up like in the movies, two seeming enemies find they're so closely matched end up like blood brothers or gals involuntarily so turned on they wiggle their tight leather clad asses at me in front of boyfriends - stunned/anrgy realizing facts of life! The insane were the teen's/20's local city gangs on 600's, fearless fast passing anything anywhere through blind tights and over crests but I could hang behind trucks or wait till after a crest, slowed for known hazards squids ignore and be right back on pack in under a minute- keeping bike lengths behind, not to force them into errors, till they'd commit to a line, the Peel would zip past on either side to end up out of sight setting up next turn-picking up my pace before they finished their turn!

Two 600cc squid squadrons - found out were about 5-10 mph faster top end than Peel, as they'd not let off for crests and would catch pass me that fast > after ~mile in opens going 130 on up slope I'd be slowing down both from lack of power and fear. I almost always encounter squids by running up from behind to see them playing maxed out race games. If I took off from stops before them they'd be wheelie limited to 100 and couldn't take turns like Peel. They'd played life/death for keeps, not joy rides. One my now traffic killed out/state ride buddies tagging behind them on SV650 to catch up at gas ups, warned me not to ride with them as had hours of working up hot pace getting to best/worst Ozark's area. That particular event lasted 60miles/45 min into their city to all bunch up at stop sign from behind around me, glaring at me like a gang trapping a stranger in their neighborhood. But Peel had 6 gal tank so didn't have to stop at a station to carry on the fight.

According to my calculations, the Arkansas flash has about a year and a half spent on this site, in the last eleven. That’s allowing 10 minutes for posting and lingering, per post. Seems he would rather talk about building a motorcycle than actually building one and entertain us with his flights of fantasy.

100% truth full or not I enjoy reading them

As do I. Moreover, buried in the dense stylings are many interesting tidbits representative of a decade + of study, application, and appreciation for the Commando, its quirks and its frustrating appeal. It's like watching a conflicted, almost one-sided love affair from the sidelines; who can resist?

For me at least, all these posts are MUCH more entertaining and informative than hearing somebody tell us Armageddon is imminent every time an oil valve is mentioned.

Bless your heart, Rick.

Forgive me Jim. I spoke out in haste and frankly don't understand why the hobot posts irritate you so much. But that's my problem.

For the uninitiated: The expression "bless your heart" used around here keeps its original intent, and is warmly given. But it is often used by those native to the southern U.S. to express contempt. Often given with a fixed smile, it can be most unsettling when you realize what is really going on...

to express contempt
or condescension. But we have gone a long way from Commando top speed so to return to it I would like to relate a report that I heard of a dead stone stock Commando was going 142 mph! before coming to a very abrupt stop.......at the bottom of a very deep mine shaft.
Just so there is no confusion I am joking.

This site is A LOT more interesting when Steve posts regularly vs when he doesn’t. His recent break proves that.

I don’t always read all of his posts to be honest, that’s cos I’m not necessarily a fan of his writing style.

It’s the differing opinions that bring this site alive. So long as we all appreciate and respect our differing opinions.

It’s when the debates turn into two sides arguing from fixed positions that this site goes down hill rapidly, as it is with all such sites.

So long as we remember that there is no universal thruth, to live and let live, and to agree to dissagree sometimes, this site will continue to entertain and advise in equal measure.

I always figured about 115mph for a stock 750 and 125 for a Combat. Stock 850s are purported to be even slower (105mph?) I'm sure you can get a little more with tall gearing and I know you can get more with modifications. The Seeley's are faster because they are so light and tiny, all other things being equal. A road-going Commando that could push 135 mph without risking a blowup would be quite sufficient, thank you. Who's riding one?

Personally, I hardly go much above a ton on the road these days anyway, other than for the occasional short burst.

But I do enjoy trying to get there fairly briskly though !

==============================================

No, stock Combats have a 19 tooth front sprocket which limits top speed in order to get a couple tenths of a second faster quarter mile.
My book of road tests of Combats show top speed of around 110 with stock 850's even though they have a higher 21 tooth sprocket lack the compression and cam of the Combats and so the 850's top speed is around 106 in good health.

However Mr Hobot absolutely will not admit to flat out lying that his quite stock Combat with a single Mikuni did an honest 135, instead of apologizing he blabbers on lying about another of his pet fantasies, that "modern" bikes just eat his dust and oh how he can out handle modern "corner cripples"

Ok, I read the above we all need to get along "kumbaya" post above, fine kumbaya until the cows come home but I have a first amendment right to free speech just as must as Hobot has free speech to lie constantly on this forum. I am tired of it.

hobot lived it up on Ms Peel so sorry for those outside their experiences, especially with only Norton parts, which is all they had in their hey days setting records for 1/4 m's and even endurance contests. Even in their hey day Commandos were known more for their acceleration than top end as essentially every other sports bikes had higher top speeds. For smug naysayers - we know of two all factory 750 Commandos the world opinion held impossible to beat the new cycles in 1/4 m, then put down 12.24s and 12.12s. I plugged conservative weight figures into drag-hp calculators to see results spit out *65* hp! That's what Norton claimed a Combat put out but who'd believe that - unless hard hearted enough to operate that harshly, like hobot. Still Ms Peel did not have the scary spunk my '68 P!! 9000 rpm dragger had - mid 10s 1/4ms, done a few years before me. It'd get almost 130 in 1/4 so easy to top 140 mph just beyond but I never approached that - maybe 120 riding with the 1%'rs Hogs it attracted, as too harsh vibes to hold for long. Also no way to break below mid 11s w/o a flat drag slick, so never felt the G's its race pilot did but good enough to best 750 triple smokers in cities. LOL Ms Peel claims I'm being challenged on were still kind of sluggish Norton performance to me, sheeze.

That's a matter of opinion perhaps, but except for a time between late September 2015 and May 2016 he has still been posting here at fairly regular intervals.
