Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

From what I understand, Gardners were the original flatslide setup. I've seen them on Vincents and the like. He's still around making carbs along with his son from what I am told.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Whent to HF today and procured a 5 pound vibratory polisher. Threw a bunch of hardware in with the green triangles. 4 hours later all nice and clean. I got a spare bowl that also came with walnut shells, I'm going to throw the pistions in tonight. So far worth the $70. Better than chucking the parts against the wall with a wire wheel.

What is this set up? I have never heard of one or seen it.

Gardner carbs are relatively modern, flat-slide carbs. They are pretty common in Premier Class racing as a replacement for the Amal GP's. They're illegal in stock vintage classes. The downside of both Gardner's and Amal GP's for the street are that they have no idle circuit. They're pretty much made for track use as far as I know.

Oh my oh my oh my, THE Sir Eddie!
These instant Gardners are not mine but bwolfes also a remarkable innovator here.
Its hard for us deer brain bashed in survivors to keep the authors straight on these forums posts. I did get to show off you fine finned covers on mocked up Ms Peel at the INOA NY Catskill Mt's rally this summer. Ms Peel engine only lacks some extra holes tapped in to be essentially done.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Well I pulled the trigger and made another RGM order. Slowly obtaining parts for the 2 bikes. I order a bunch for the 73 and throw in a few for the combat. As I sit now I have everything except cables, foot rubber, rearsets and final wheels. I'm going to use the set of wheels from the combat for now, they are fairly clean straight and wearing new shoes. Once all the ordered parts arrive and I get buisy powdercoating I can make quick progress. I need to machine the cases for the cam bearings and finish striping paint, then assembly time. I can't wait. Should be a roller by the time the snow flies.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

First parts cleaned, polished and assembled. And my RGM order arrived.
So nice shiny parts and a Lansdowne kit. I'm looking forward to getting it on the road.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Wolfie, which Caswell kit were you going to get? I used the Copy Chrome electro plating and it worked ok until I messed up the solution. I was looking at their Cobalt electroless kit for $90. It's really hard to tell with the electro plating how much plating is on the piece, so some of mine is now rusting in parts and would like to re-do some of it. The electroless would be a lot easier, just need heat. I haven't looked at how much area the $90 kit will do, but I think it's replentishable. The secret to these kits are polishing and de-greasing.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

I threw all caution to the wind and made a huge order to RGM for stainless fasteners. I know I'm asking for trouble, but I have years of experience working with them on aircraft. I have a few tricks, and a tube of boelube. I am tumbling the parts that are not stainless, so far they are cleaning up nicely. I don't think I will be getting a plating kit just yet.
For $65 at HF and $20 for the media the tumbler has been a great investment. I should have gotten one years ago. Highly recomended.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

I got most of the transmission cleaned and assembled today. Just need to finish cleaning the main housing then I can button it up. Got my trees blasted last night, hopefully tomorrow I can powdercoat them and assemble the frontend with my temp wheel. Then on to the swingarm and cradle and temp rear wheel.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Progress. I have almost all the gloss black parts done. Only part left is the frame, and I still need to do some welding. So on to the assembly. I still need to get the engine and transmission cases done. I made a nice access noch in the trans cradle so it can be removed without moving the engine. I need to stop today for a bearing and some seals then I can finish the brake drum. Then press in the swingarm bushings and hopefully get it rolling in a day or two.

I've thought about doing that since the first time I realized there wasn't a way to remove the &^%$# thing without removing the whole bloody engine.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Me too. I was getting the cradle ready to powdercoat and whipped out the plasma cutter. I am going to be happy I did it.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

A little shiny assembly...

CNW does that mod as standard on their ground up rebuild bikes.

*Looking real good there Mr. bwolfie!

PS: How is that parts shaker/cleaner thing you got from HF working out?

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Thank you for all the compliments. I wanted to finally build a bike the shiny way.
The shaker works very well, i've run it about 5 days straight so far.
I got my oil tank reinforced and the chain dribble tube removed tonight.
Also made some fork nut spacers, chain guard spacer and a quick change bearing holder.
Also Got the trans case and barrels painted.
Now to mod the engine cases for the holder and needle bearing, a little paint and I can start assembling the engine.
Frontend is all done, waiting on a bearing and seals and i'll have the drum done.
Should be a roller soon.

Re: 1974 Commando 850 Dunstall build.

Since hopefully this w/e I'll have my bike stripped down to the frame, I'm starting to look at frame finishing. Was the factory finish a very glossy black like yours or did it have some flattener in it?
