We're motorhome people and there's a rule of thumb in our community that, if a tire is 7 years old, regardless of what the tread looks like, it's time to replace.

In June 2010, we bought an '02 motorhome that only had 12,000 miles on it. The tires looked fine, but when I looked at the manufacturing date code, it translated out to October 2000. The chassis was probably delivered from Ford to the MH manufacturer in mid '01 for it to be originally registered in May of '02.

First thing I did was get 6 new tires (dual wheels on the back axle). Motorhomes don't react very well if a tire blows out, but motorcycles will be even worse. In my time at N-V and in my earlier commuter riding, I only had one catastrphic tire failure, and that was on my 150cc Vespa at about 20 mph in my home neighborhood. I did fall off in the resulting gyrations, but just got a couple of scrapes.

Check the date code on your tires and replace if they're more than 7 or 8 years old.

Ive been haveing a good talk to your motorcycle , and its told me , While it may not be perfect , parts of it are excellent . 8)

Yeah Matt it spoke to me the night I first saw it too, and with only a small flashlight all I saw was it's potential. Cj

What happens with the "D" rods? Were they all bad or just susceptible to damage failure?

Hi
Looks to me as though you have a load of fun ahead of you. Good Luck. Tesco has chrome cleaner on offer.

Progress is slow, but I'll post Con Rod photos. I'll use a better camera too, the Fisher-Price toy camera that I borrowed from my 6 year old daughter for the head light shell contents and oil cooler is 1.6 pixel and not really good enough. Cj

Got the head steady off, took a fair amout of shock to help the bracket to head allen bolts out, also was held on by the outer two only. The PO left the middle one off---made it easier for me though. Does anyone know why the balance tube has a "T" between the 2 carbs with a hose comming off of it going to nowhere. it had a K&N air filter on it.

If its running electronic ignition , could go to that . ?

big Balance toobs to balance impulses for better idle .

A can of CRC is definately going to make your life easier.
On any bolts / nuts a week in advance , & re applied a time or two . :D
Can save a lot of blood , grunting , and language unsuitable for Ladies & Small Children .

Thanks Matt , Understood....1 can... err...case of CRC. However I'm prone to using language that is unsuitable for ladies and small children anyway. Cj

I had the same "T" crimped also.Part of the original oil tank breather set-up. #40 etc below

Thanks Speirmoor!! Yeah Matt I guess by '75 , Norton had to try and contend with Emissions. Well, I cut an allen wrench down and was able to get the carbs off. Then I got the head through bolts out, then the front two Nuts came off ( the stud came out with the left hand one) and the rear nut came off easily. Started thinking that i should break loose any bolt on the head before i removed it and discovered that the Left hand spark plug is really tight. I was able to break it free but it is REALLY tight so I left alone until I get the head off, thinking that since it is on the side with the thrown rod & busted crankcase. The piston or something might have hit it and messed up the threads on the plug. (not sure how much of the plug sticks through into the combustion chamber). The head seems to be stuck on pretty darn good. Had to stop for today will try again tomorrow.

I've enjoyed looking at your pictures. Condition is similar to my MKIII when I got it. For me, I really wanted to save it. I wasn't so much worried about the $$$ or the labor I put into it, but it looked so sad! It was stuck, primary full of water, pretty nasty all the way around. When my wife first saw it, well, I can't repeat what she said, even on this forum! I had gone over to Baxter Cycle to sell Randy a Velocette MSS that I had, and had him throw the MKIII in as part of the deal. She didn't know I'd be bringing a carcass back. It was a total impulse deal closer on my end. Hang in there. It will be quite a journey, but well worth it.
