Well I've done it again and gone out and bought another '75 MK3. It needs lots & lots of TLC. This is a sickness isn't it ??
After driving back all night, here it is in the light of day.

Yet Another One

Here's the first major problem.
Yet Another One

Then I noticed how the Exhaust nut wasn't threaded in all the way on the left hand side.
Yet Another One

And on the right hand side it was.
Yet Another One

Creative use for the wiring harness-holding the exhaust pipe on.
Yet Another One

Fears confirmed, the threads are stripped.
Yet Another One

Thought the wear pattern was interesting.

Hi CJ

Nice find, needs a lots of work but thats all part of the fun, must have been left out in the weather for some time, if it was mine I would take the motor and gear box and dump it in a drum of diesel for a few weeks before pulling it all apart Hehe.

Have fun

Ashley

ARGH , the The L.H. exhaust nuts cross threaded . Id suggest you sort that out before you start it . :D

A couple of cans of C.R.C. might come in handy :? Pay to use the other rod as an ornament , least it follow suit .
Should be able to weld up cases . Crack Test Crank before spending there . Chances its just the rod snapped .
Hope the barrels o.k.. You might be in for a set of rims .

Being me , id toss the Electric foot, throw the gearshift on the proper side , seeing as theres already some alloy welding reqd

A couple of weekends should see it done . dont forget to check the tappets .

Seat and tank look ok,,,should keep you out of trouble for awhile,,good luck. PS - make sure your Tetinius shot is up to date,,hehe,,,,,,rich

Get some ( a gallon) "Evapo-Rust" , warm it up, then put the rusty parts in it and they will come out as near new as possible. It will clean those carbs to new.
Check out their web site.

A new addition to the famdamily , congrats ! I like the piece of cotton fluff in the hole where the rod cap hit when it blowed up real good.

OMGoodness the poor thing, just needs a fire now to fully finish off. At least its a lovely rear tyre i;ll take off you hands if it comes off w/o burning it off. A fella left a message last pm that he heard I was into Norotns and has a basket case to offer. Hot dog less tearing down just easy throwing out parts- like this one eh. You are a sick puppy addicted to long term suffering before the fever relieves.

I don't care for the non-reed-valve crankcase ventilation system.

hee hee

Great "before" pix for the eventual before & after!

Really? Hole in the crankcase, everything that could rust... did, and you're worried about some crossed threads in the head?

That is way more than $10k worth of work in front of you. God bless you for getting it.

Brings new meaning to the "mono shock" concept. :D

Congrats on the new addition to the family!

Who were the miscreants that previously owned these Nortons? I can't quite get my mind around why anyone would leave a motorcycle, especially an old Brit bike, outside exposed to the elements. If it blows and you can't or don't want to fix it, pass it on. I've got a non-runner in my garage right now. Popped a piston top. I ordered the parts and had Leo Goff do the machine work (head, barrels and cam bushings) some three years ago. New aluminum gas tank, new three phase charging system, new Taylor headsteady, new Web cam, all awaiting assembly. Somehow I just lost enthusiasm to assemble the thing. But, never would I abandon it to the elements. Since I turn sixty-seven next week, I'd better get cracking or offer it up.

I think in the old days they were basically considered disposable. People didn't place a high value on them, and when the bike presented a problem they couldn't solve, they said to hell with it and left it to rot behind the barn. You could buy good running bikes for $500. Even in 1970s dollars, it wasn't much money.

Now, of course, it's a different scenario. It's a hobby/passion/sickness, and we dump all kinds of money into them. My bikes are my babies. No way I'd do that to them!

Nice color on that car for a Norton tank! Any idea what caused the hole in the case? You have an adventure in front of you for sure. Dumping the whole thing in a bucket of ATF or kerosene and letting it soak for a bit is not a bad idea. My guess is it will pay off in getting things apart.

Looks like my boys in Hungerford are going to be busy! The bike I did for myself last year (now the dreaded "Signal Orange Shortstroke Roadster") was in a similar state bar the level of corrosion and the hole for the mouse that lives in the crankcase (very considerate!).

Hey Ashley,I wish I could soak it in a drum of Diesel, but I live on a Navy base and they frown on Hazmat outside of "approved areas". I've actually done it before on some crusty carbs off of one of my old SOHC 750's, but that was way before I joined up. I'd get myself thrown out of housing if one of my neighbors made a phone call. MK111 I do have have a current Tetinius again thanks to the Navy. LOL So John, you Like those head steady springs---I'm thinking CNW head steady, so...I'll sell 'um to ya if ya want :) Mikegray660, I know it's gonna be up there but hopefully not 10K , I'm thinking runner not show bike and it'll have the aftermarket stuff i want on it. Torontonian I am real curious as to what I'll find in that hole, If all goes well I'm gonna see about getting the head and barrels off it this Sunday. Hobo T, It's funny you should say that 'cause I too was thinking of you when I was airing up those tires---I'll give ya the front Chen Shen, but the rear Yokahoma is cracked real bad. It rolls in and out of the garage much better with the air in there-& they're still holding :I I'm with you Grandpaul, I don't like the crankcase ventilation "modification" either. Swoosh, I'm not worried----but maybe I ought to be! Chapman, I get to convert it back to dual shocks, right :) JimC ---how can it help get you motivated.....maybe more pictures of messed up things on my bike showing you that yours isn't that bad off :) Will post more as it gets underway. Cj
