Wobbly clutch. Can anyone venture an opinion on this one please?

When you have the clutch apart again have a DTI available and check the runout of the mainshaft at the clutch end, ie its side to side wobble not the endfloat. The mainshaft is long and has the large weight of the clutch on its unsupported end and can be bent by the forces, it was the failure mode of the production racers until they added an outrigger bearing. It may be that 70 mph is the point at which the wobble from side to side sends the clutch rod and clutch centre on an adventure.

What about the standard procedure "didn't want to work for me"? 1/8" travel is too much. If you loosen the lock nut on the clutch adjuster and screw the adjuster in until it until all free play is gone in the operating lever and then unscrew 1 turn and lock the nut, you are set correctly. All this must be done with the handle bar end of the cable slack. If this does not work, then you need to find out why.

Also, is the wobble gone? There can be some with the clutch lever pulled, but not noticeable when it's not. If it's wobbling when not pulled, you probably have a bent mainshaft, bad sleeve gear bearing, bad clutch bearing, or bad sleeve gear bushing(s).

Hope someone finds the sorry saga useful. I belong to The BOC forum (Bayliner Owners Club). I couldn’t run my boat () without their help. More unreliable than a Norton.

Well done.

Bayliner is owned by Brunswick. You know, they make bowling alley gear and exercise equipment.

I am not surprised at their unreliability.

I worked for a sat nav company that Brunswick purchased in the early 2000s to leverage our marine division, which was very good at the time. They cocked up the merger big time and sold us off at a loss.
