I think the reputation Brit bikes, from the early 1970s onward anyway, for being unreliable, leaking oil, vibating themselves to bits and having rubbish electrics is very undeserved and was concocted by the motorcycling press at the time. And just stuck. Lucas electrical components are very good in my opinion, perhaps other than the handlebar switches, which I don't like. Reliability? I rode my T140 and my B50 as daily transport for years and did quite a few long distance trips on both, without ever breaking down (well, the B50 broke down once, when a chunk of the throttle slide broke off and closed the plug gap up on its way through, but that was a bit of a freak). The C15 I had before any big bike was a completely different kettle of fish - if I got 20 miles without something causing me to stop and fix it or without something falling off I'd consider myself to be having an especially good day, but 250s tended to be like that - passed through several teenage owners who thought checking the oil was a bit girly by the time they were 10 years old and infested with horrendous bodges. A properly looked after Norton or Triumph or BSA of the '70s was likely to be as reliable as a Honda.
