My 73 has a Pazon and is running fine but every now and again it wants to kick back even with a good healthy kick. I'm going to take a suggestion gotten on this board to retard the timing just a smidge (not going to use a strobe). I need to know which direction is retard (clockwise or counterclockwise). Thanks, Jim

As I remember, but check, the cam in the timing end is turning anti-clockwise. So retarding would be clockwise with the pazon plate, no? You'd do better to get a cheap strobe and check it. Check the Pazon instruction, you can get them on line, but again I'd really suggest a strobe, you want to time that thing at full advance. Idle will take care of itself.

You're right that the cam turns anti clockwise, but to retard the ignition, you need to turn the plate in the direction of travel. That's anti clockwise too.

Yes, move the "breaker plate"/"pazon plate" in the direction of rotation to retard the timing.

Just a sidebar, my Boyer fired 850, when timed with the strobe to the specified 31 advanced at 5K, ran like a mutt. I advanced it a goodly amount and "timed it by ear", it runs great. All the power, no kickback, excellent fuel economy, no pinking, etc.

I'm running 34 degrees advance on methanol, and the motor pulls like a train. I've always allowed an additional 4 degrees advance when changing from petrol to methanol

Also if a degree or two of retard doesn't work re: occasional kickbacks - then I would pull the timing cover and check for camchain slop ,easy to tighten up . Re-time again.
