so i took my old bearings out, went to order replacements, and found this:

https://www.oldbritts.com/wheel_upgrade.html :|

i'm pretty sure every bearing i took out was sealed, but i didn't write down part numbers like an idiot. what is the front spacer measurement if it is still full-length?

also, if it is still full length, are there not original-width sealed bearings out there these days?

doesn't look like i need to worry about anything changing in the rear hub, eh?

thanks, all

matt

there are new sealed bearings of the original size available, I have them in stock and probably others on this site also

good to hear... just need to make sure which one i need, now. don't suppose anyone has a spacer out and about they wouldn't mind measuring?

The interesting bit about original size double row wheel bearings in 2RS is that none of the Ususal Suspects like FAG,INA,SKF,NTN etc. offer them and the ones which show up are considerably less expensive than the unsealed ones from the big names. Might raise an eyebrow or two ...

I've heard some reports that some of the double row sealed bearings are not up to the job, but I got mine from Walridge a long time ago.

Why do the "usual suspects" not offer them?
Who are the "big names" that sell the unsealed ones?
Why do you think the ones that show up are less expensive?

I cut down my spacer to use their (Old Britts) bearing. It is no big deal if I choose/need to replace the bearing again and if I want to use the sealed double bearing that matches the original open bearing, I just need to replace the spacer for $10. No big whoop.

holy crap. why is the old britts double row bearing $48, while the RGM "sprocket bearing" (listed for front disc brakes) only 17 GBP??

anyone have a source on bearings with the dimensions of the old britts double row, except perhaps without the magic norton dust sprinkled on top of them? is the RGM sprocket bearing the same thing?

not sure why you would want o modify your spacer and machine your hub to fit the 5203 bearing which is 1.5mm wider than the readily available and cheap 4203 (sealed) correct bearing .

That was the only apparent choice at the time.
Don't over think it.

The 4203 is the open bearing. The 2203-2rs is the double sealed unit. 17x40x16

Walridge offered those double row sealed bearings since about 2003 as far as I know, at least before OB was still talking about milling the hub, not to disparage OB.

4203/4203-2RS is a "Sealed Double Row Deep Groove Ball Bearing 17x40x16mm. Similar in design to single row deep groove ball bearings, they have two parallel deep grooves and high conformity between the balls and the raceways.":

2203/2203-2RS is a "Self Aligning Ball Bearing with Cylindrical Bore 17x40x16mm" :

so... since i threw the old bearings out before i realized "milling things and putting in non-standard bearings" was something i had to worry about:

nobody has a spacer lying around they know was modified (or not) and can measure for me? i tried taking measurements of the hub, but it got a little janky and i don't trust my numbers. i'll get better diameter numbers on the appropriate side with a bore gauge tomorrow, unless someone finds a measurable spacer before then - much easier to verify that way, seems to me.

thanks, guys.

so... essentially the same, but 2203s can tolerate slightly-less-than-perfect installation, and may deal with heat a little better?

The bearing you need is 4203-2RS.

well... as soon as i figure out whether the PO put original sized or wonky sized bearings in there.

amateur mistake, throwing away the old ones w/o replacements.
