I've been looking for my old 850 Commando that I found went somewhere back in Connecticut so I am still looking for one & came across an Orange 850 hi-rider that's original but' has been stored for about 5 years. It ran last in 2009 but hasn't been tagged since 2000. Are these desirable? I would want to change a few things that I don't like...I don't care for the color, tank, bars & seat. I guess the headlight is smaller on the hi-rider too. The bike itself is decent for one that age but needs some cleaning up & things like the calipers and such need going through. It's in the $2500 range as is. Any thoughts?

Fastbacks werent worth much not so long ago but now people want one. I want one.
Highriders were a joke until a few months ago it seems, now there is interest.
Perhaps.
Id guess that since within certain limits all Norton models are modular the question is going
to be how much you or the next owner values originality and how much it will cost you
to make the change. AN pretty much has everything on offer if you want to establish
a base line cost.
Roadster tanks allegedly will be ready from AN soon and all the seats already are.
Headlamp, guards, exhaust, grab bar and whatever await you.

Your call, your money.

Does it run? Even basket cases are starting to fetch 2500 dollars depending on how bad they look to start. Is the High Rider tank steel or fiberglass? You can always save the parts removed from the High Rider and turn it into a Roadster or Interstate. Steel tanks for any of them are fetching premium prices so factor it into your analysis.

A bloke buying bikes in the US in the 80s , paid 11000 for a showroom condition one . The British National Motorcycle Museum REFUSED to accept it , as a donation . Saved it turning to toast , I guess . 8)
one othe bike he paid over a grand for . only a feew had over 10.000 on the clock . A few containers full .

However , the racketeers have got into it , like the ' classic car ' industry . Try picking up a issue of ' classic & thoroughbred car ' these days . A true entusiasts magazine still
a rolling dollar sign more likely . The yuppies after theyed stuffed the share market & everthing else they touched , saw ' potential ' in classic cars . Oh Dear . . . . it really is the end of the world .
They dont drive them . Except to shows . Perhaps .

ANYWAY .

Thats a ' SS ' , youll need pipes & brackets . and a seat . Dont botther with the tyres . Though a Yuppie Airbourne at 100mph . preferably a good 30 ft. up , might be worth a look . :D 8)

We Degress . . .

Another Step in the Chain of Evolution . must be a awful lot of part No's in the bolt on attachments for the good ole Commando . I do hope youre GOING TO RIDE IT . :o :?

That was a wild goose chase....After driving an hour to look at it, the guy had a mechanics lean on it and now said the owner doesn't want to sell it! I did find a completely restored, immaculate 1974 850 Commando I'm in the process of buying. The only thing I would like to change is that it's black and I'd like it to be the Royal blue like my old one. Is there any good used tanks & side covers available I could paint blue? I'm also getting a partial restored 1969 BSA 650 Thunderbolt with a lot of new parts that needs the engine overhauled yet. What are they worth these days?

The latter Commandos in very nice shape are approaching $10K pretty regularly these days, and typically fetching that much.

The High Rider at $2,500 would have been a good deal.

BSA projects in work can be worth a couple (to several) thousand if all the major parts are there, new overhaul parts already included, and chassis bits are already powdercoated.

Itll be worth More with a Commando Crank in it . If Not Financially . Combined with a big bore barrel , you get a bit of displacement . 8)
