I have installed a Podtronics regulator/ rectifier in my Commando - single phase 2 wire Alternator - now that the zener diode has been eliminated do I simply leave the wires disconnected ? I can connect the red ( ground / earth) to the chassis but do I simply leave the brown / blue supply disconected ?
( making certain the end is insulated/ not shorting) The instructions for the Podtronics unit explain the connections for the new unit and there is no reference to the now unused Zener wiring. This is a new main harness BTW-
Also , the warnings about shunt devices and their potential for damaging the alternator windings have been considered and I have chosen to take my chances.
Thanks in advance from an electrically challenged individual.
Cheers- RT

I would connect the red to the chassis ..... no harm in that, and more earth connections is insurance.

Next, I would insulate the connector of the unused Zener wire, and tuck it into the harness so it is there for someone who might want to go back to original.

Slick

I heat shrink and pinch every wire end I do not use, then wrap with a bit of silicone tape and secure to harness.

I'm making a Christmas tree ornament out of my unused diode parts.

this is probably much to do about nothing, but I ran the wires (Zener power and ground) as normal - terminated the ground to the rear bolt on the foot peg mount. I had a old, spare, Zener - applied a piece of shrink tubing over the electrical tab and mounted it in the support plate with the tab facing downward. I installed another piece of shrink over the harness connector and secured the lead to the frame with a zip tie. this way, there is no way that the zener could be connected by accident. I did this to not have an open hole in the support plate and to maintain an overall stock appearance.

Mine is negative earth now, with a 210 watt 3 phase alternator. The zener will never be used again. Wires taped up as advised here. The hole is filled with a chrome bolt.
