Just got a copy of this months "Cafe Racer" magazine, more Honda cra-- stuff every issue. Anyway a comany I have never heard off before is advertising their new line of nice looking Fiber glass body work and once again they claim & I quoat " Ethanol Safe"! They use Phenol epoxy liners so my question to you chemistry majors, is this stuff safe? We don't talk about this enough on the forum so I thought I'de ask.... Check them out at legendary-motorcycles.com the add says they have a eBay store too.

Good question as almost all epoxy is phenol based at the core. Novalac is about as good as it gets, but don't know if good enough for long term ethanol exposure.
As them if Bisphenol A or F as base.

Epoxy lined tanks will last a little longer than GRP made with non resistant polyester resins, but unless the rest of the tank lay up is also epoxy, failure is still pretty likely as the bond between the lay up and the liner will be poor, and subject to exactly the same problems that effect the various ridiculous tank sealing products!

Other than reducing production costs there is no good reason to make tanks in this way, and the correct way to manufacture them is using the correct resin system, with the proper production processes, and very carefully monitored post cure............
