What is the reason for the Springs clips around the Isolastic vernier adjustment collars?....If the boots are intact debris can't get in to block the tommy bar holes???
The purpose is to secure the rubber boots so that any moisture and debris will remain trapped in place, ensuring ongoing deterioration.
There are reports of heathens removing all the boots decades ago and reporting much higher satisfaction, blasphemy.

Good luck getting them to insert and seat properly and then keeping them positioned in a seal tight manner.
I make sure they cover the threads, wipe the edges down with silicone paste to help with sealing and then peel them back periodically to make sure the cavity is clear.
