My 72 commando was ready for its MOT on Monday, warming up in front of the house, just putting on my riding kit, climbed on the bike decided to recheck the lights.....no main beam.
Bike goes back in the workshop, identify problems with the controls switch, take it apart clean up the contacts and decide to spring for a rebuild kit consisting of new paddles, buttons, springs and ball bearings. Rebuilt the switch and after a couple of false starts ended up with a working switch and MOT rebooked for Tuesday.
What I learnt:
Buy parts from RGM, over the Christmas period parts take about 24 hours to reach me, that's quick and their website is easier to use than AN (RGM are AN dealers).
If you hold the switch upside down in a vice it's really easy to remove the electrical Board without losing any of the springs and the ball bearing.
When putting it back together, a smear of engine rebuild grease is nice and thick and holds the springs and ball bearing in place.
The paddles are handed, if you put the RH one in the LH switch you will get strange results. DAMHIKT.
It's easy enough to do, don't take any notice of what the workshop manual tells you.
