There is no magic right answer to your question only a bunch of opinions. Mine is - find a later model yellow Corvette and look at it. Pretty darn close. Velocity Yellow.

what exact original yellow? (2011)

Several people have offered advice and help. Have you followed up on any of it?

Original gelcoat-finish tanks and side covers were restricted by gelcoats available and the pigments used would still be the same. When I made my own side covers, but had to spray the tank, I found colour guides for the fibreglass bodied gelcoat-finish cars of the same period (Lotus, Bolwell, Stingray etc.) However I still came up with several different formulations although they all appear to be pretty close! The can says "A22 Lotus Yellow Gold"
On checking pigments I have found there to be two- Chome yellow and Cadmium yellow, it seems that the use of the chrome (with lead) has been dropped and the cadmium now has to be modified to get a match.

did you ever ask your paint guy what info he needs, I can do a visual match to Pantone or scan in X-Rite - which light source would he (or she) like?

I used 2005 Mazda Chrome yellow. I didn't have anything to color match but I think it looks pretty close to the pics of the original tanks posted.

dear All,
anyone can tell me how to reach the exact original yellow to paint a tank and side panels for a Norton Commando Roadster Year 1973?
Thank you and best wishes for the upcoming year!

from what i have heard norton only had yellow bikes in fiberglass. but i have come up with one company that claims to have original color paints for bikes.

http://www.rsbikepaint.com/en-gb/colours.php

suposidly valspar was the company that sold norton their yellow gel coat, it was called canary yellow. valspar no longer makes gel coat they sold that division or section or whatever they called it to lillyram who are suposidly selling the same colors, they are calling it canary yellow L-27.

composites@lillyram.com

from norvil i got the information that Alpha Romeo Giallo Yellow is the correct paint colour, i didn't get a paint code, and for gel coat Llewelyn Rylance Sunburst Yellow is the correct Glass Reinforced Plastic colour.

http://www.llewellyn-ryland.co.uk/gelcoatsandflocoats.html

doing my resarch i have been told by different people that the color is canary yellow, Fiat taxi giallo yellow, Renault Canary Yellow, Alpha Romeo Giallo Yellow. so that is what i have found so far in my search for a match for norton yellow

.. still wondering.. what yellow?
It's an unanswerable question!

Gelcoat is not paint so if you are making panels, you need the right gelcoat which is probably no longer made and certainly not glossy like modern clear coated paint. I had an original damaged glass panel in yellow. It had black tape over part of it (like a stripe). Under the tape was a very different color to the part that was exposed to the sun.

If paint, you probably won't find the old paint (lacquer?) anywhere to even have it mixed, and painting it with modern paints and clearcoat will not be a match now matter what the color.

So, IMHO you need to find a clear coated paint that looks good and tell everyone it's a perfect match :)

Gents, as Lorenzo’s last post on this was nearly 8 years ago, I’m kinda thinking that he may have found a paint choice by now !

Even if the post was from 8 years ago the advice for a first stab on 60/70's gel coat colour match is the same, look at the British Standard colour codes and the RAL colour codes. These were available off the shelf and an easy quick solution. They even used the colour name in some cases.
