So when I bought this 2016 it came with many extras, one being a set of non-cat shorty exhaust. PO couldn't get anyone to work on the bike thus he sold it. And my ownership has not been without problems. They said it ran very much like a Ducati 900SS, I had a 900ss, bull sh-t! This Norton was a pig! So I thought about selling it, But thanks to Tony A I sent ECU to the Coote's boys for reprograming to new non-cat exhaust! Put things together today, Holy Sh-t what a difference! It lit the tire up in first gear! Actually pulled the RPM's like I expected. But this is not without another problem raising it's head, major oil in the air box, oiled up my rear break, that was scary! Will search for that fix, some of it was my problem. I slightly overfilled the oil tank, plus getting hot and expanding . I now will always check oil at end of ride not at the beginning. Thanks again Tony and Dave Coote

You are very welcome Sir ! I wish I could have helped you more , and I hope you will keep and ride your Norton 961 .
I know you have a 2016 , Things to check :
Does your bike have the Oil in Air Box mods ? ( oil air separator . oilfeed screen , check valves and later long dip stick )
Does your bike wet-sump ? ( The oil should not drop level once you park it overnight or some days )
Does your bike have the oil catch bottle behind the left footrest plate ? ( this is important because you will get more oil into the intakes if you don't let it drain out)
If you have the small bottle , consider increasing it to a 4 OZ or 8 OZ bottle ( nalgene make a perfect size for the job)
Last - Call me if you want to discuss it .
 
Sorry I don't know if it has upgrades to the air box, I doubt it. If you have a pic of the new upgrades please send one. How long is the long dip stick? Yes it wet sumps and I have just increased the catch bottle size. Thanks

Thanks that answer's my question, no I do not have the new dip stick! Anybody know where I can get the new and improved dip stick. Are the rods pressed into the cap or threaded. If threaded I'll make the correct rod. Thanks again

Threaded . Yes , make one ! You can also buy one from Thiel Motosports . Look at this thread :

 
Made new dip stick, lowered the oil level to the "New" full mark, took the bike for a 5 mile easy ride, left set to drain over night one drip maybe in new larger catch bottle.

Went on mine today, it has been running really well and then when pulling up to a junction it cut out on me. Started up again no problem but the engine management light came on and stayed on. Rode another 40 miles with various start/stops and no real issue but did backfire now and again so I guess some fueling issue.

I regularly go for a blast on mine and it will behave flawlessly except often, once per ride, it will cut out as I slow to a stop. It’s like the bikes saying ‘“don’t get cocky mate, I can still let you down when you’re least expecting it!”:rolleyes:

I get that slow idle to intermittent stall at a stop on an occasion. Its annoying AF but I can deal with it. Mostly in the hot months. Best turn off the key to clear it and restart instead of just restarting on the fly, if its safe to do so.
 
Coote's suggested I change Throttle sensor and Idle air motor to cure shutting of problem !?!?!?!?!?
 
My bike used to cut out when hot frequently. Always the same situation, coming to a stop at an intersection or whatever, and when pulling the clutch in it would cut out.

I put on new leads, coils, plugs, sensors. All as a dart board, didn't really know, new to the bike type changes. And, I guess I thought, I'm keeping it so why not have new components. No noticeable difference from any of those changes.

Then I blocked the balance pipe. Problem completely gone, idle is solid and consistent, never cuts out. Has ridden different since the moment I did it.

Very interesting - although I don't have any serious idle issues modifying the balance pipe has been on my job list so I have to ask - is there any chance that the manifold was leaking and in doing this work you have sealed it?

I'm in the same camp. I'd love to try it just to see what difference it makes.

My TPS sensor was changed last year and has run well ever since. Just that wobble the other week. But glad to see the engine management light has now gone out

@cliffa and @Clive from my perspective, I'm still pretty new to 961's but not to working on cars and bikes.

When I got mine late last year, it idled and started really inconsistently, did the up and down to 2k when hot and, as I mentioned, just died when you'd pull the clutch in at the lights. I did the normal things, sprayed carby cleaner around all the obvious points when trying to diagnose it, blocked the IAC (on the throttle side and the airbox side), changed plugs coils leads etc.

The worst thing was that I felt, as much as so much advice is good, there was a lot of anecdotal or non evidence based changes being made to improve things. I was only every guessing.

After reading alot, the symptoms were so in common with what @iwilson described in his threads, that I couldn't really ignore it. The reality is, the EFI system is a temperature sensor, a crank and cam position sensor, a TPS and o2 sensors. The ECU can only take values from those and output to the coil, injectors and the IAC. It's when to spark, when and how long to spray fuel, and add some air for idle control.

The balance pipe mechanically interferes with the outcome the ECU is adjusting the injectors to achieve. The ECU says put fuel here, and the balance pipe (combined with 270' engine design) makes it go there. When you hook up the cable to the ECU you can watch it happen on the laptop. Yes, sensors do fail, there's no doubt. But the system simply isn't complex enough that it can't be made consistent. and blindly "guessing" which or if one is the problems has cost a lot of owners, money, time and heartache.

Since blocking the balance pipe (and before the installation of the delta) the startup, idle and low end/just off idle performance of the is significantly better. I don't need to "ride around" the bottom end like I used too, holding a bit of throttle and juggling the brake so it doesn't stall at clutch in or have it foul a plug into uselessness in traffic. It's consistent and predictable.
