My solution for wet sumping (as suggested by Ken Canaga) was simply to remove the plates on the sides of the oil pump and lap the oil pump body so there was less side clearance at the gears. I also lapped out any wear on the plates. I tightened it up until clearance was close to zero. After that it quit blowing oil out the breather on start up and the oil tank level doesn't seem to drop much when sitting for a week or two. It seems that oil would still leak past the gear teeth but for some reason it worked.

Don't know if this will work for everyone but it worked for me.

I had similar results some years back. My bike would drop the oil tank level below the feed tube in a week or 10 days. After resurfacing the pump per the Norton Service manual, it can sit now for 5-6 weeks before dropping to that level.

When starting after a period of non use I look in the oil tank and as long as the feed tube gauze is not visible, I start the bike with no other "procedures." involved.
