Welcome To The Future

My concern on this when it was first aired, was what about insurance??
I suspect the reason for rented scooter use may be down to this being included in the rental cost

Do they have lights? Or is there a rental 'curfew?' As someone who used to do Central London at midnight, the traffic was diabolical enough without throwing these into the mix..

You be sorry, we have had them in our city for sometime now, there are 2 companies renting them out, the biggest problem is they are a eye sore left all over the place, when they first came out the first ones had brake problems and lots of riders where injured and needed ER treatment, people getting knock over by speeding and careless riders, then there are the fools who think they are stunt riders without any experience or people who should not even go near them let alone ride them and be ridden where they should never be ridden, our local council are getting a big slice of the cake from the owners to operate them here, but the ER doctors hate them, so good luck with them as in the long term they will be everywhere on the side walks and pathways.

The reason for rental only has been stated as being to stop a flood of cheap, nasty, unsafe scooters flooding the place.

Personally I think it’s a really bad idea, there’ll be loads of accidents.

It‘s getting really unfair on other vehicle users. I’ve noticed a couple of times that I have pulled out dangerously close to an oncoming cyclist, then I realised why, they are CYCLISTS, and they’re going UPHILL so when my mind computed their location it did not factor in them being electric powered and doing at 25mph plus, uphill towards me.

I live in Oxford which is a big cycling town, people fly around on electric bikes, dressed in dark clothes, no lights (even at night), they’ll do 25mph and are oblivious to the fact they've only got bicycle wheels and brakes, and they dash around ignoring traffic lights, switching from pavement to cycle path to roads like theyre f*cking invincible.

So... these new scooters sound like a GREAT addition to me... NOT.

Rant over. Pass me my pills...

Only rentals and privately own not allowed, sounds like money has changed hands to bring them rules in or some people high up on the take from the company.

How will law enforcement know how to make a distinction? Anyone can put on a painted or transfer logo.
Is it legal to ban certain vehicles based on group of ownership, at the same time allowing other bodies to operate them? This looks like a step back into Victorian times.
If lack of insurance is the reason behind the ban to operate privately owned scooters, then what hinders these owners to get insurance themselves? Or to form a registered cooperative of shared scooters?
I believe the London council has prepared the ground for a legal battle they can't win.

Lots of them in Germany, but they could ony be unlocked via an app when you paid. Each one did have a registration number, and were speed limited.

They also have dedicated cycle paths for cyclists/escooters.

Yes, they did have lights for night time use, but in general, they could be left anywhere, blocking pavements/undeground station entrances etc, as you just open the app on your phone and it will tell you where the nearest one is because they are all tagged.

Normally at the weekend someone from the company would drive around collecting them and bringing them back to a central location and also for any maintenance needed

Its different here in NYC. The rental must be returned to pick up location so its not attractive to commuters. Mainly for tourists use. Privately owned ones are legal here no Insurance necessary but must stay in the bicycle only lanes (if they exist) . I've been to other cities where they have rentals (Sacramento and Salt Lake City) and they are an eyesore. Strewn across sidewalks , discarded recklessly after a ride time and time again

Sure is... but that’s got nowt to do with scooters...!
It's not hard to imagine a scenario involving alcohol and those who may be a little disgruntled (good word!) with local law 'enforcement'. Not so much in the way of confrontation, but loss of respect, perhaps..

Just read pubs can open from 6am tomorrow..... Official reasoning is to stop those who might have thought midnight was okay.....
No longer a case of: 'What is the world coming to?'.... We're already there. :-(

Illegal? they are all over the streets (and pavements) in London. Saw one riding two up through St Johns Wood yesterday evening. There will be accidents and injuries and blame shifting onto motorists and motorcyclists....
