Wassel / Lucas

If it's of any interest, I just checked my LAP-branded indicator and it's marked 'England', with no 'Made in'. That muddies the water a bit, but I would presume the 'Made in'. Or maybe that's just what they want me to presume ...

I installed a Lucas marked 3 phase stator in a MKIII this spring with no problem. What part of it didn't fit?

Oh it fitted, because apparently it is not genuine - ask Wassell's, I have, and they have allegedly been made the same since 2008. And they clearly say their 3 phase product will not fit a MK3 Commando. I smell something in the air!

Perhaps they state that because the MKIII original equipment is single phase and a three phase requires other modifications - Podtronics or similar. Just a thought.

Old thread, but pertinant.
Red box?
Green box?
Which is the Chinese made stuff?
More specifically, I need to buy a switch for my T160, and I want to: (if at all possible)
1) buy quality
2) the proper fitment, not "universal/fits all poorly"

I understand the makers have purposely blurred the lines as to where stuff is manufactured.

Your guess is as good as anyones. The red vs green box needs a good search on companies house.

This is the red box mod

and Wassells are the green box mod

I believe without researching much that as the red box mod have Lucas and Girling licence's for motorcycles as do Wassell's which either means no exclusivity in either contract or a hidden link. Who in their right minds would sign a licencing deal without exclusivity even if only in your home market.

@concours both are Wassell using the Lucas name under license.

Wassell were using the Lucas 'green box' design up until a couple of years ago when, following a request from Lucas Automotive, they were politely asked to differentiate themselves.

It was at that point that they started a rebrand and moved to the Lucas Classic 'red box' design
However, there is still a lot of 'green box' product on the shelves of shops and webstores.

that helped me to understand the progression.

Thank you

I commented about all this in 2017 but it's time for an update. Back then the "Genuine Lucas" stuff in green boxes was officially "Genuine Lucas" but it was whatever they could get and box. Wassell is trying very hard today to provide quality products in the Red boxes. An example, I once bought 10 of the Norton-type master switches in green boxes. Two of the 10 were excellent, two were good enough to use, and the rest were trash. I've never had a problem or return of them in the red boxes. In fact, I've only had problems with one thing in the red boxes.

Here's that update. They started selling taillight bulbs, dual polarity. They are great in the earlier taillights but not correct in the later rectangular taillights (917 type). When I explained to the owner of Wassell, he scrambled to get proper bulbs made for the later taillights. They became available over the summer and when I tested were perfect. They too were supposed to be dual polarity. It turns out that in a negative ground bike, they work well. In a positive ground bike, all LEDs are on full with the lights on or brake on. The manufacturer screwed up and the replacements are due in January.

I'm fully aware that Wassell is not highly respected today. At one time, especially in the Triumph world, they were the prime aftermarket source, and they are trying to get back to that stature. Also, most of the products being sold buy online sellers are from Wassell - that's how they have become big enough to buy the rights to or companies over the last several years. Some Norton products are hard for them. For instance, the red box turn signals are at least as good as the originals, but the volume is so low for Norton that they are not making them. Norton requires long stems with long threads for the front. Long stems are not a problem, but long threads are only needed for Norton and AN already is having them made after market so the volume left is miniscule.
