Warranty Work

I see a big problem with that. This kind of operation must come from Norton. BECAUSE there is a warranty attached and direct competition for current sales . Norton are running JIT inventory (Just In Time) . Everything must be connected to a buyer in other words. Nothing sitting around collecting dust and losing money. Make no mistake , these bikes when finished will be like New MK2's.

Who better to do this than Norton ??? It will help all involved , The dealers will be happy , the customers will be happy etc.. Those bikes will come with a warranty and certificate from Norton . Does anyone else see the concept ?
Norton seem to be having some difficulties delivering their new bikes in a timely fashion - see Sam’s thread - so they would need to employ more staff to take this on. Perhaps in time, but the 961 would probably then be a classic bike!

Also..
From what I have read about the earlier bikes, my Mk2 does seem sorted - 1400 miles so far and counting, it starts on the button every time and handles well on the move. Started commuting on it since returning to work ( teacher) and it is good but still does not like slow speed. Filtering (lane splitting) is legal everywhere here in the U.K. so you are never sitting in traffic but the roads are really busy so 15/20 mph is about the safe limit if you want to avoid the loonies changing lane without looking.

Not sure why Norton would do that though Tony. Who would they be competing with... themselves!

Seriously, those likely to spend top dollar on a fully refurbished and updated 961 will surely also be the same folk contemplating a new one.

Also, by the time the extra labour and refurb costs are factored in, I very much doubt a fully refurbed bike would be any cheaper than a new one.

So, all in all, I’d say it’s only a viable proposition after new 961s are no longer legally possible. Then a viable business could be established along the lines you suggest, actually, rather like Mick Broom did with Heskeths.

I suppose , But the older machines may languish and never brought back to spec. Which troubles me , for the future . I say get them updated and back in the pipeline.

Getting back to the Warranty thread, my experience recently with the factory has also been superb. I went for a quick blast last Friday and had the misfortune to have the gear linkage shear at one of the threads. I managed to get the bike back to base just by using 3rd gear. I immediately rang the factory, as I'm doing the Kop Hill Climb this coming weekend and really, really didnt want to miss that. David Moore in the service dept took my call, listened, sympathised and promised to send all the necessary parts straight away. They arrived this morning, Tuesday, as promised, except the linkage wasn't quite the same and fouled the crankcase. I emailed Dave and he came straight back to me with a solution, ('bend if carefully, that's what we do'). He also pointed out the correct way to fit all the nuts as my 'dry fit' was not right. Half an hour later, all done and I'm back on the road. Thanks to David and his team for their efficiency and understanding.

Whilst we are on the warranty thread, what about when the bike is out of warranty , Norton could perhaps do a service plan to inc servicing /Mot,s / unforeseen things breaking/ a monthly fee like the main dealers do in the car industry designed to look after the customer & his vehicle, it’s a revenue stream for them & peace of mind for us,I’m sure a lot of owners would take out a service package from one, it’s just how much would it be ?

That's a great Idea Richard ! Just like the car makers. You pay an extended warranty and the contract spells out what it covers and for how long . And I hope you had a good time in Portugal .

Did you bend it to match the old one ? Sounds a little tricky. Use a rag in a bench vise ? Does anybody wonder where the V4's are going to be built ? All the lifts (5 I think) are filled with 961's now. A separate building maybe ?

First of all, Re: Matt at CNW, they charge roughly 35k for a rebuilt Norton and 40K for the MKIII. So to what extent would they rebuild the first generation 961 and how much would someone pay? Also, go on Norton's website. They already sell used motorcycles, although they are the "limited edition" bikes like the SE and the Dommies. I really don't get that. Slap and number on a bike that's no better and sell it for more. Not like its a 'Cuda 426 Hemi. It may work in the Uk, but most of us overseas would still be hanging in the wind. Not so much because a lack of factory support, simply because of the lack of dealerships or mechanics willing to take on the work. I could however see a certain couple of Canadians that could make that business work.
