It's crossed my mind a few times that vernier iso adjusters are not in any way vernier in nature.
Anyone know how they got the name?

Yeah, I suspect that Pierre Vernier is tossing in his grave over the British misapplication of his French invention. :)

"Anyone know how they got the name?"

Maybe it just sounded better than "turny things?"

Naw not infinitely adjustable so much as -finely adjustable-,
after crude ball park adjustment for initial fitting.
Vernier cam sprockets similar usage.

Definitions of vernier on the Web:

* French mathematician who described the vernier scale (1580-1637)
* vernier scale: a small movable scale that slides along a main scale; the small scale is calibrated to indicate fractional divisions of the main scale
wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

* A secondary scale with finer graduations than the primary scale of a measuring device; the vernier measures between graduations of the larger scale

Kind of humorous. Years ago we used vernier calipers. Now it's all digital progress I guess

DIGITALLY ADJUSTABLE ISOLASTICS!!!!

I wonder if that's Jim's next project?
