My Mk3 came with plain Veglia clocks which work ok but do have some minor damage to the bezels. First question is would it be possible to have them rebuilt with wiggly worm faces when new bezels are fitted.
I have a spare set of T160 wiggly worm clocks that I bought off eBay when I came home from the pub one afternoon a little the worse for wear. So my second question is would it be possible to use these clocks in place of the Veglia‘s? Bearing in mind the T160 clocks don’t have the little screwed studs on the lower case as they are just a push fit into the rubber pods of the T160.

It has been said by some that Veglia gauges cannot be rebuilt.
certainly I would search the archives for posts regarding this if I were you.

"It has been said by some that Veglia gauges cannot be rebuilt".

I had been told by a good friend who has owned his Mk3 since new that he had had problems with his Veglia instruments regularly and I believe has replaced them several times, as the Mk3 that I am rebuilding had a mismatched set of Veglia speedo and an earlier Smiths rev counter so I replaced both with recond. correct "Smiths" gauges.

Veglia clocks can be rebuilt depending on their condition but aren't what I would consider a very good instrument. The Smiths gauges are better in that they have some dampening and anti vibration rubbers to protect the movement. I'd look for some Smiths gauges if it were me.

As was the custom at the time, they rapidly acquired a nickname and were widely known as Vague Liar instruments. ;)

Even the Italian bike manufacturers started to drop Veglia clocks and used Japanese instruments durning that period.

Oh yes, on my bevel Ducati, at speeds over 140 kph or so the needles begin to wave back and forth - pick a speed, any speed....
When this starts though, it's a bit academic as to exactly how fast you are actually going, if you get caught, its a huge fine, loss of license or both!

Quite fun though, belting up the looong Spa straight and watching the needle wander from 160 - 240-ish kph :)

When plod asks 'and how fast were you going, sonny?', making windscreen wiper impressions with the finger to imitate the speedo needle is your only defence!

Are you sure the studs aren't there? All the Triumphs I have that push into the rubbers still have the studs - I don't have a T160, so just asking.

I have a T160. :)
As far as I'm aware, the standard T160 instruments were Smiths RSM 3006/00 tacho and SSM 4004/00 1000 (MPH) speedo.

T140 clocks (pre-79) do have the studs, presumably the studs disappeared when they went to the T160 style instrument panel for the E model - and Veglia instruments.

Interesting. SSM 4003/00 looks identical except that they have studs.

Smiths with studs do fit the T160 instrument housings
