Hi.
Just went to replace the valves on the 750 and found one inlet guide was loose, not sloppy, just slides up n down about 1/4" or so when I apply pressure with my finger. Not so much as for it to come out.
I guess its time to replace the guide with a .002 oversize item ? yes ? opinions appreciated. Also can anyone give me the OD of standard inlet guide so I can see what I'm dealing with.
Cheers JUG

The Workshop Manual quotes the 750 valve guides as outside diam 0.5015/0.5000 inches.

Some heads were prone to cracking around the guide, so a careful inspection may be required.
Oddly too, the manual doesn't quote the guide material.

Its not unknown to lightly plate the guides to increase the diam sufficiently to hold them.
The 850s used a larger diam guide - although there has to be enough metal for this to work.
Jim (comnoz) has mentioned guides and problems before, maybe he will chime in.
hth.

If it's loose enough to move it by hand when the head's cold, it will be much looser when the engine's hot.

First, on an engine as old as ours are, you are unlikely to know if it's been replaced before so you don't know if yours is standard sized ( unless you've owned it from new ).

The head will probably need to be machined out to take the oversized guide. It's best to take the old one out and measure it to check it is standard sized before buying a replacement.
