value of complete 750

I have a friend who is looking for a Commando motor for a Woods framed flat track project. I have a spare motor. What is it worth ?

I know, I know, they are worth whatever two parties argee they are worth, but I don't find any prices for complete motors so I have no idea where to start. The motor is a complete '70 750. It turns, but I have never looked inside it. What is reasonable ?

You can buy a whole project bike for $$, so how much of that is the engine ?
A 1/4 ??
 
I would feel around $750 would be reasonable. Whole bikes can be had for double that.
 
What kind of shape is it in and what serial #? I think $750 is the absolute minimum. More like $1200 anyway. The whole bikes for $1500 are rare and usually pretty bad.
 
I've sold a few complete engines (Norton & Triumph) needing total overhaul, all for $1,000 or very nearly as much if missing a key part or two.

Now that I have pulled it out of the barn and looked at it, it is complete (no carbs), there are a couple broken fins on the head, no big gouges, exhaust threads are still there, however, it might be a bit of a mishmash. The serial number is 20M3S119829 but it has a Commando timing cover with the points on the end of the camshaft....

If it is a 20M3S (camshaft points) Commando engine, then the serial number should be higher than 131257. Could it be 20M3S/149829 ? 119829 is really too early to be any Commando.
 
Yes, 20M3S motors started with 131257 in March 1969. A 119xxx number would be an Atlas or N15/G15 from the beginning of 1967 production. A 1970 motor should be somewhere between 134xxx and 141xxx.

Regardless, a points-on-camshaft motor with a couple broken fins and no carbs should be worth at least $600. My guy can fix the fins for under $100.
