Hi:

Is there a problem in reusing pistons and barrells in good condition but from different machines?

Thanks!

I would still check the clearances and have the cylinders honed. The existing rings should then bed in OK.

What's wrong with the pistons that were with the barrels originally?

Well... I don't really know... They just seem in worst condition than the others, but it sounds logic that the pistons originally in the barrells may fit better.
Right?

That's something you will have to decide, but you did describe the old pistons as looking "perfect" in your previous *"pistons" topic?: http://accessnorton.com/norton_commando2685.html

But I suppose there's no reason why you should not use your new pistons in the second set of barrels, provided that you carefully check the clearances, and as Keith1069 mentioned, the barrels will need to be honed, otherwise the rings will not bed-in properly?

*It's a pity this topic has been split into two parts, as it might have been better to update the original post rather than start a new one, so everyone could follow what has happened a little more easily?

Just thought there was lots of different threads into the same one and thought it'd be boring for you, chaps, to read those many troubles and not very well explained, into the same topic.
Thought it was tidier and other members who wouldn't get into that first thread would get into this new ones and would make it more participative?

The pistons look really good, but I don't have the knownledge to say if they would be still usable. When I first saw M. Hemmings DVD everything seemed much easier!

Should I place new rings on them?

The pistons are marked on the head "std" and into their skirts with AE and numbers, but when I've cleaned them there's no other stamped signs that would indicate front, right left or any other thing as they usually do, so, in my messy style, I forgot to mark the pistons so I could identify them whenever I would pop them back on the con rods.

OK sparkplug, it's not a problem really, but I do think it helps everyone to help you (or anyone else?) if a recent post concerning the same subject matter is updated rather than a new post started, so that everyone can follow the whole story in the correct time-line, and I doubt that anyone will be bored?

You will need to measure the piston to bore clearances, as given in your workshop manual. And I would certainly fit a new set of rings. And any ring wear ridges removed from the top of the bores, otherwise stepped top rings need to be fitted?

The original pistons are not handed (as in Left hand or Right hand) and the gudgeon/wrist pins are not offset as far as I know, so it is unfortunate that you didn't mark them, but if you have to fit them without knowing exactly which way they were before, then you can do it I suppose?

If you examine the slight wear marks on the thrust faces (front & rear) of the pistons you may be able to tell which way around they were before, but maybe not which one was left or right?
