Hey Gents,

Does anybody know, if one orders parts from the UK to Canada....is there taxes, dutys, and tariffs that are going to make it a bad idea.
For example...I'm about to order some bearing kits, because it's one third of the price....but may not be worth it in the end if there's too many surprises.

Have you had an experience in this?

I can't say to Canada, but to US, I have always found lots of parts including shipping much more reasonable from UK than US dealers. Shipping is a bit much on larger items, so I stay away from silencers, exhaust, mudguards, etc, but I have bought bottom end kits, gear parts, bearings, gaskets, etc., smaller items and saved lots. No extra fees or taxes on my end, just the shipping.

Chester ,just received a well wrapped box from R.G.M. U.K. . after a month,not their fault but the postal strike which is now over until the next regularly scheduled one. G.S.T. or H.S.T. or whatever scam they use was 75 bucks and Duty was 25 smackers , payable at the front door to the nice postal delivery guy by credit card inserted into a hand held device requiring my signature on a plastic screen. Peter.. edit, BTW I live in CANADA ! guess where... Oh yes,never ever use U.P.S. to handle your delivery, cross border delivery /brokerage fee every time , this is the scam.
 
Must be the empire nations like those duty fees and the VAT. Hasn't happened here in the US, but expect it to at some point. I did send some stuff to Italy one time and the fella was charged a huge import fee because I declared insurance on it.

Just placed an order to Burton Bike Bits in the UK this morning for 5 Fastback parts. Tail, side panels, number plate & rear fender. Shipping was 46.00 GBP to the USA. No VAT. Thought that was reasonable. Makes me wonder if I'll be hit for some type of Duty Tax.

No additional taxes that I can think of.
 
i've found import tax tricky. I don't know what the rules are, but I can tell you
fedex and ups will charge you import tax a lot more often than usps- i *think* anything $500 or more and they send you a bill

coming from the uk most of the time royal mail which then goes to usps will be fine. parcel force or dhl which is then forwarded has a much greater chance

also depending on value you may get a bill from state or the feds. NC has a law where you have to declare purchases (internet, overseas, etc...) voluntarily on your taxes. most of the time you can get away with not, but one time they caught me and sent me a bill months after. was a nice surprise :evil:
 
We don't usually pay the kind of import taxes by way of individual purchases here in the states but I hear California is going to start taxing Internet buys next year aggressively. As a kid my trips to Canada left me thinking it was a incredibley beautiful place, even your cities seemed so clean it was like a movie set, maybe that's why you get taxed like that. Liars knows we sure can't figure out how to spend tax $ well...
 
I have purchased numerous parts from the UK for my Triumph T160 (Commando parts I can usually find in Canada). If the value of the parts is less than $50, and is shipped Royal Mail, the parcel USUALLY just shows up at the door with no additional fees. I've found the Royal Mail/Canada Post service takes about ten days to two weeks (Ontario). If you use a British freight forwarder you'll get dinged with a brokerage fee. If its more than $50 they'll hit you with HST. UPS from the States kicks you in the crotch with a brokerage fee every time!

Australian customs is reasonably soft on private imports of goods. With motorcycle parts, as long as the commercial invoice value is under $1,000 they just let it straight through. I found vendors like RGM process and email order within a couple of days, airmail it and its here within 7 days.

I've gotten parts from RGM in 3 days in the eastern US at a rural PO. That's amazing. I've never paid any import fees, yet, but I don't think I've crossed $600USD.

I don't know, I must have been holding my tongue in my mouth just right. It was 3 days, I couldn't believe it.

I have had this happen to me more than a few times with RGM. The only one quicker were Old Britts but that of course is local. Other side of the country, but might as well be cross town.
 
My RGM order arrived in 6 days, I figured that was good for as far away as they were.
