I think Old Britts are real easy to use compared to some of the others. I never had any trouble with Fred and Ella and Ella is vary prompt with my orders. Phil

I like the site and the diagrams are VERY helpful, I just think it would be easier if I could type in a part number and have it come up. Other than that, the site layout is just fine!

I haven't ever bought from OldBritts, but I'm sure I will in the future..

I never cared to deal with domi and I don't anymore. There are a lot of great vendors out there and a few bad ones. I have learned to not give chances and move on if not happy with service, contact or actual parts. I usually do business with Baxter cycle or old Britt's as my first two choices and recently have been exceptionally happy with commando specialties. I like to try new vendors as I hear about them and try to order from the ones who are decent to deal with.

If you are just working on Commandos, you don't need to deal with Domiracer. There are several great vendors of Commando parts in the US and Old Britts is at the top of my list as well. I had to deal with Domi a fair bit during restoration of my 61 Dominator because they are one of the few (maybe the only?) vendors selling parts for older Nortons in the US. However, I generally found it easier to deal with UK suppliers.

Yeah, I'm only working with Commandos, at least for now..

I'll still shop from DomiRacer if I need to, but they won't be my first choice..

Agree with that statement.

Here in Oz, there is a vintage motorcycle shop in just about every town, but they are often over priced, poorly stocked and often owned by smelly little bullshit artists that will sell you complete shite at a premium price, usually not even the correct parts.

For us here in the colonies, freight from the US is very very expensive, from the UK is generally quite reasonable.

The dealers in UK generally know their stuff.

With the commando I am presently doing, I sent a little "test" order, to see how they went, was a good outcome, so have sent a lot larger order though, infact all the parts required.

Truth is you should use the phone with Domi Racer. If for no other reason then the fact the he is so much fun to talk to. He gives good advice & you will know what is in stock and able to be shipped now. I like the Internet for ordering some things but to me ( only my opinion ) These old bikes and most of the people/companies doing biz with them are not the big generic Walmart type companies. And still most do have great e biz abilities. Old Britts site is so extensive I have spent hours just looking through it learning things. Still I use the phone because Fred & Ella are so nice I like talking to them. Domi's is good as well, but do call him. He's great. I'm not going to say your a kid, your not but you did grow up at a time when everyone pushes buttons instead of talking in person & you may not understand these sellers are small buisnessess of a old style. I have complained about a vender here, & I actualy regret it but I was directly lied to many times & I still don't understand why. To me not being truthful is wrong. But I don't think that's what happened to you.

I'm all for calling if it's necessary, I.E. if I need advice, but between parts diagrams and dad's advice, I usually don't feel like I need it. When I do, I ask on the forums.

It might just be the fact that I'm 25, but I don't really like talking on the phone. I'm OK talking back and forth via email, but phone? Ehhhhhh.

I don't feel like Domi 'lied' to me, I'm just disappointed that I'll have to make yet another order, paying more shipping, to get the parts I need. /shrug

Bottom line. His site says to check for availability . It just came to me how spoiled we all are that we complain like this. When I was 25 you could not just order parts and have them in days. 99% of this stuff was not even available but if it was, it was used, came from another continent off a crashed bike in the back of some old shop in the rain & took months to get here. I couldn't even find body work for my Dunstallized 750 for a long time. It took work to get stuff when I was your age. Now it's in every magazine. I for one would like to use this time to thank all the shops I by from for making it so easy.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I just think if my order is processed and it looks like the parts are being ordered, then I should get all of those items. I'm ok with waiting for items to come back in stock, but the way it is now it's really just a big crapshoot on when it's available again, and of course the repeated shipping costs.. Just kind of irritating..

I have ordered from Domi's website and had short orders delivered.

If you post an online shop and allow searches by part number and then allow them to be added to a shopping basket then everything listed should be in stock.

If you can't offer this then do like RGM, have the catalogue online but do not allow the parts to be ordered and instead give a phone contact number for placing the order.

I've used the RGM webshop to buy parts many times, and never had to phone them?

Just tried RGM online for the first time in a few years and it does work now, didn't before.

Old Britts have been great. you will not believe how fast some things get to you. If they do not have something, Elle will email you to see what you want to do, back order, cancel, sub.

RGM has done well for me also. Some good pricing on special things.

Going direct is an option for other stuff like Amal (paypal) or Pazon in NZ. You save money that way and shipping is fair. The Pazon unit will cost you $115 shipped (Its got one smooth curve). You can buy 3 to one Trispark

Ebay is alway there but caution is the word here. No matter how carefull, you will get a little scorched sometimes. Paypal

For Mikuni stuff (jetting) I go to Pats Small Engine. http://www.psep.biz/store/mikuni_carburetor_part.htm Paypal

I hope this helps to shift the direction of this thread.

In the amount of time this thread has run you could have ordered and be receiving all the parts you need by Monday from old britts. Pay the little extra and call Ella or fred. I get stuff in one to two days from them or baxter. It really is a treat to deal with them. You owe it to yourself to shop around being new to this and check out the different vendors.

Personally I think we're a little spoiled with the vendors we've got. I picked up an older BMW a couple of years ago, and there are virtually no decent online sources for part, definitely nothing like Fred & Ella's site with inventory listed. Nearly any dealer won't have the part in stock and it takes at least 10 days to get it from Germany. Not to mention some of the parts from official BMW vendors are ridiculously expensive. Dealers wanted around $150 for a starter solenoid that was all of $38 from a Bosch distributor! Bing carb parts are cheaper through BMW than from Bing though. Go figure. For all the old Beemers on the road, I'm amazed there's not an online dealer of the caliber of Old Britts, Clubman or Rocky Point, just to name a few.

haha

thinks could be applied to a number of threads length wise- but what else have we got to do during winter

I always e-mail parts lists to several vendors mentioned here, then await a reply with price and availability.

As my orders almost always cover parts for multiple bikes, and typically number dozens and even hundreds of parts at a time, I then cherry-pick the best prices and place separate orders from several vendors (any additional shipping charges are offset on the total).

Typically, I e-mail in the order, then follow up with a phone call to ensure they've received it and get the name of the person handling the order. I ask for a good time to call back and follow up on the status, BEFORE THEY SHIP.

Once I do all the follow-up calls, I get the specifics on anything that was back-ordered and make another round of calls to alternate vendors to order those parts from someone who actually has them on the shelf ready to ship. At that time, I make all the final payment arrangements for MERCHANDISE THAT IS READY TO SHIP.

Zero issues for years now.

I admit, I've narrowed down my list of suppliers over the years from a dozen to only 4 or 5, that I know I can count on. Domiracer is on the list whenever it involves pre-Commandos and pre-unit Triumphs.

That's how I try to operate, too. I shop around for the best deals and place multiple orders accordingly. I'll just need to be more careful next time--no more assuming it's available just because the site let me add it to the cart..
