TVS 961 RECALL....

Norton are hand assembled, in small batch production. Not exactly Honda making 1000's of bikes a day. So far, as an owner, there's no concrete info, nothing official. However I did read the following from a new owner in another forum... ''Managed to book in my service for a couple of week's time with no issue. Mentioned the recall but was told I'm not affected if I haven't received an email''. So it seems its not all 961s, just some, but how many? I suspect must be a batch of a bought in component that has been discovered to be not up to standard...

The fact they are small makes my points even more valid. A big company can more easily temporarily pull resources from different areas to handle a temporary task of this nature. A small company with a small headcount cannot.

I don’t think anyone here, or on FB, has mentioned being contacted yet, so I think we all need to wait n see. I hope they get on top of the coms soon, they need to ‘control the narrative’ on something like this.

Forum sweepstake on the issue?

My money is on head gasket
Too simple methinks Kev - they’d implement that at the dealers I reckon. Also insufficient number of cases I think. Guess we’ll know pretty soon.

Pro-active approach is good to see; they need to communicate clearly’n’quickly (fallen short in the past with this).

No doubt they have a plan, both technical and logistical; this isn’t a backstreet endeavour. Reckon they’d get 300 bikes in their foyer 😁!

TVS 961 RECALL....

That's why I'm thinking head gasket as Facebook is full of pics of very shiny rear tyres

Just contacted my dealer, ( Oakmere) and they informed me NOT to ride the bike , a 23 / 961 because it's a starter ring gear problem. So Norton will be sending out letters and picking up the bikes
of those concerned in due course, which seems bloody stupid considering the seriousness of the situation and the state of the postal service at the moment . I thought we lived in a digital age now.

Do we know that ?
No not categorically but where are the posts on a recurring failure and the campaign website for disgruntled owners on the same issue.

There are disgruntled owners but the reasons are not based on one fault but more like niggles and single but varied faults.

An example would be the Porsche Cayenne with its prop shaft bearing, Porsche had to be dragged kicking and screaming to extend warranty and improve the part.

Comparing Norton to Honda assembly isn’t an excuse to a recall.
In my opinion, Norton should be more detail oriented.
ALL bikes are hand assembled, why people make this a topic is humorous.
Nortons are assembled by team members at a much slower pace and according to TVS the attention to detail and the “state of the art” factory they spent millions on.

Soon we’ll find out more details.
At least they’re admitting and acknowledging the issue.

I called my dealer yesterday to book a first service and was told then about the do not ride notification. I was assured I would be contacted quickly. Its 30 hours on and nothing.. So I called the dealer back again and they again confirmed the Do not Ride and said that Norton would be sending letters out. Incredible really, surely two people could have called most of the owners by now.. If they had simply asked the dealers to make the calls it could have been done in a couple of hours. But anyway the lad at the dealer confirmed a starter ring issue. When I pointed out that that's pretty serious and could result in an engine seizure he confirmed and said that I shouldn't ride it under any circumstances. Obvious really but what's less obvious is why I'm only finding out by accident and presumably lots of riders out there don't even know as much as we do right now and could be planning a big ride out this weekend. Anyway - I asked how long this would take and he only said that he thinks they are 'hoping' to get things started during May... So far quite disappointed by it all to be honest..

Just had a response from Norton themselves:
"Thank you for contacting Norton Motorcycles.
If your Norton Commando 961 is affected by the recall, then you will receive written confirmation as soon as possible.
Please do not ride your Norton Commando 961 until you have been given the all clear. "

So does indeed 'appear' it may be a batch problem rather than all..

it seems it is certain runs of numbers off the line that they want to check and re-loctite, reading the very recent FB posts. Hopefully that will soon publish those numbers, so that owners can check whether their bikes are affected!

Safety Recall Notice Information posted on Norton Motorcycles' website

Just seen the stop ride notice on the Norton website. Just approaching my first service, it saves me riding it to Nottingham, so not that bothered.

Also, appreciate Norton's due care, because reading between the lines, that if the problem occurred it could lock up the bike. So very happy for the timely recall.
