Triumph hurricane

I've been around a few of them, but was never offered a ride on one...

Nothing else quite like the mechanical banshee howl of a Triumph/BSA triple when it's "on the pipe"!

I rode one during the China National Day Parade here in Hong Kong, our classic bike club was invited to participate and I picked it up from my friends house and delivered it back, which was a ride of about 8 miles each way. The bike went well, although the front brake was pretty poor and I didn't feel the handling was nearly as good as a Commando. I always liked the look of these but I don't think they look so much better than a standard one that I would be willing to pay the massive premium for a Hurricane.

sweet... had seen a pic, and looked them up for fun. rare and pricey now. shame they weren't much more popular...
i like the fluid look of the bodywork! was there anything else similar? seems far out and unique for the early 70's. I like the 3 muffler fan pattern too.
Imagine one with a modern disc brake!

I always loved the looks, didn't somebody post a story on this a bit ago?

I just can't believe Triumph didn't resurrect the model in the modern triple, it took some aftermarketeer to.....

...wait a second, that's EXACTLY what happened back in the 70s! Craig Vetter was the one that designed and prototyped the Hurricane.

The more things change...

The funny part was the frist triple I saw, the blender designed model, was so ugly to me that I never considered a triple again.
I have a friend who had his choce of everything his dad offered in thier British bike dealership, and the one he kept was a triple.

Hi all, am I the only person on this planet who thinks the aesthetics of the Hurricane are vastly overrated & that it is in fact not very easy on the eye?

You may well be. Admittedly it could easily have been improved but look at the bike Vetter based it on. You have to also look at the fads at the time that inspired the Norton High rider.

I think it looks vastly better from some angles than from others and it's not as nice 'in the flesh' as in many photos.

That's the ticket! Park it next to the High Rider and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Same rule surely applies to anything including the Ariel 3

The 45 mile range might be an issue for some as well, although it wouldn't stop one looking good in my garage....maybe someday

The 2 best days in a Brit-bike guy's life, the day he buy's a Hurricane and the day he sells it.

Hurricanes are fun to look at
BUT they have all the PITA problems of an air-cooled triple AND
a very limited range between gas stations AND
they are uncomfortable AND
they handle funny (that motor is TOO wide).

Unclviny

an old post i know but only just spotted it and seeing i have a Hurricane thought i would chime in ....

owned it for 18 years now ... bought it when they were affordable .... one sold in New Zealand a few weeks back for NZ$47,000 .. must be mad ... I can think of a lot of bikes i would buy for that money in fact you could buy 3 or 4 for that money

yes the range totally sucks big time , it is however the most comfortable triple to ride , handles OK if you use modified dampers ... but really hard work through tight stuff because of the longer forks and rake ..

and well i think the look neat ... but i would as an owner :)

when ever i ride it i always get heaps of folks want to look and talk about it ..

did i mention the range ... i did but i will again as it really is an issue in Australia ... I rode from Brisbane to Sydney and back a couple of years back .... did 14 fuel stops on the way back in 1100Kms (700 miles ) ... had to just in case ...

a pic of my one

yes, very pretty.... I wonder how much cheaper it would be to build a reproduction?

It could be done by a good fiberglass or metal fabricator. I'd use metal!

I'd also make the gas tank bigger by at least a gallon, to increase the range to 100 miles, minimum.

I've got a '74 that i'd like to do that to, but the frame won't allow the use of the 3 individual header pipes (and I have a decent set of those, too!)
