Triton Custom Built Cafe Racer

I always believed that the archetypal triton was the combination of a Triumph preunit engine in a pre 1960 Norton Wideline frame. I have never heard of one based on a Commando frame. There is one on ebay with a starting price of Aussie $8,490.00-go to the ebay site at http://www.trojanclassics.com. There are pics but I am not sure whether it incorporates the commando isolastics mounting system, including the commando swingarm set up. If not, I would have thought the spindly commando frame would not be up to the task. However, I guess that as it has Triumph and Norton components then arguably it is a Triton!!!.

Reminds me of one I saw at a show earlier in the year, a really nice proper Triton with all the goodies, but it had a single carb.

I have to agree Bazz, There was a very clear rational for building Tritons back in their heyday and it had a lot to do with a surfeit of the fine handling featherbed frames, because the Manx engine was a popular motor for single seater 500 class car racing and Norton would not sell the engines separately, also the fact that the first Dominator twin engines were slow and heavy and with fewer tuning options than the Triumph. I would say that a Commando engine is a much better motor than a pre-unit Triumph so I don't really see the point. It's not terribly easy to see in the photos but it doesn't look like there are any isolastics fitted so one can expect trouble here. The fellow is also a bit high with his quoted prices for components; $1800 for a frame! My observation is that on E-Bay USA you can buy as many as you like for about US $300 each.

This is the more modern equivalent of the guys who built Tritons using the bendy Triumph frames and the iron head Norton engines that the other guys threw away when making the real thing.

I saw a Commando with a BSA A10 engine in it once.

I think Dave's comments are spot on. Also,why someone would want to put a less powerfull motor in a commando frame escapes me. Some people!!!!!
